Nvidia 7600GT *AGP* driver question
« on: March 05, 2007, 02:40:23 AM »
All (and looks at Krusty),

I've installed my newly arrived 7600GT card, but it's an AGP card.

As such, the highly-touted 84.66 drivers do not recognise the card. They plainly state that they recognize no compatible hardware.

I have tried all the 8x.xx drivers and they all report the same thing.

The card came with version 93.71 drivers on the CD, and they installed fine. These are also what the nvidia site says are the most current, but interestingly, the vendor's website (XFX) offers me a download of 91.47, which I'm going to assume is actually older than what's on the CD.

Do any of you nvidia experts have any suggestions as to what driver I should be installing?

I've mad a Ghost image of the hard drive in its video-driver-less state, so reverting to a clean time and installing a new driver is a snap, so let's hear it, guys...

I put a 7600gs, also a XFX card, in my kids box and am using  the 84.66 drivers. not sure why yours wont recognize. Oh, the cards been in about 3 weeks. Those  93.17 drivers came with it also, they suck. hope you get them working.

That would be because the 7600GS and tghe 7600GT are totally different cards.

The 7600GS was in existance when 84.66 drivers were released. The 7600GT AGP didn't yet exist. Aparently the PCIe version did...

Still looking for suggestions, folks.

If you have the screen freezes like I did when starting AH take a look at this thread that I started.

http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=199142

I believe the AH community recommends the 84.66 drivers.

If AH freezes need to download coolbit.reg and run it and turn down the card to 4x in the the nvidia display.

i am well aware they are different cards, the GS and GT difference gave it away. However, i'm pretty sure the drivers work  for both cards.

I have had a lot more success with the 93.71 drivers than I did with the last few 8x.xx drivers.  Yea it's only an AGP 6800GT but I still found 93.71 to give me the fewest problems.

IF it ain't broke DON'T fix it.

Meaning if the boxed drivers did their job and you have fluid gaming experience, do not mess around with the drivers. You only invite trouble.

Well, I spent a few quality hours on a few different nvidia tweaking websites and discussion forums, whose members have nothing better to do than tweak old drivers for new cards, tweak new drivers for old cards, benchmark all the changes they make on different cards on different games, and then rant and rave about how one driver is vastly superior because it gets 1.5 more frames per second than another one.

I am seriously not making this up or being sarcastic.

Anyway, there are some saner heads in these forums too, and based on my readings, it seems that the 93.71 drivers are generally quite stable, about as fast as they should be, and seem to have a pretty high image quality too. So it seems I may have lucked into a good set of drivers from the get-go.

Thusfar, the only testing I've done is with AquaMark, AH in a hanger firing a jillion bullets from a Spit1, and with a Kill-O-Watt, which measures power consumption at the wall socket.

Both AM and AH seem to run fine - no crashes, no stutters, no artifacts, but I really haven't settled into a multi-hour gaming session to be sure.

Power consumption is quite good. With my old card, a 9800XT installed, my P4 SFF rig consumed 98 watts at idle, and 210 watts peak at the toughest point of Aquamark. With this 7600GT, the same PC consumes around 72 watts at idle and only 155 watts at AquaMark's peak. This machine only has a 250 watt power supply, BTW, and it has never EVER been a problem - remember, this is an SFF machine.

Anyway, more details as I finish testing it. Thanks for the help.

For some things this is true. For hardware drivers? Wrong wrong wrong!!!!!

Most hardware drivers that come WITH the hardware are obsolete before you purchase the hardware and get home to install it. Sure it may "function" -- but chances are it's got bugs that need to be worked out, or it doesn't display transparencies well, or it's only got about half the FPS it should be getting. Proper video drivers are very important, and testing new versions is one way of discovering which are best.

However with nVidia, avoid all 90-series Detonators.

And hence, my original question: as near as I can tell, it is impossible to use non-90 series Detonators with the *AGP* version of the 7600GT.

What I'm looking for is some direct, personal evidence to refute this, and if it is so refuted, a download link to the files you used.

I mess around a lot with tweaking, overclocking, flashing vid cards, etc.(ie I had an Athlon 1800xp thouroughbred running faster than a 2400). Of course now I've upgraded :)
IMHO, NGOHQ.com is the best site, if you are looking for tweaked drivers.
Tweakguide.com  for info on getting the most out of your hardware.
The following is a link for tweaked driver based on the forceware 97.92
I have never had a issue with the drivers I use from them. They always thoroughly test them before release.

Any more info needed on tweaking, flashing, give me a holler.

I Cant find any detail on there 84.66. From a couple of comments on forums its possible they work with your card. From the blurb they took the 84.66 and tweaked it to mirror the later 9x.xx drivers....they think the 84.66 was better overall....so they appear to have used it to create an alternative "updated" driver....

I myself use the 84.66 drivers on my 7600GS.  I believe a lot of those that have the 7600GT use the 84.66 drivers as well.

As of now the stock 84.66 drivers wont recognize the AGP version. It's actually not a difficult problem to fix. you can edit the code pretty easily....

How to modify the drivers to "see" your card

I'm 99% sure the one's I linked have this mod already....
