Study: Violent video games don't make killer kids
« on: March 05, 2007, 06:28:22 PM »
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) — Do video games kill? The jury is still out on whether violent video games lead to violent behavior in children, but a new study asserts that killer games do not make killer kids.

I always found it hard to beleive there were people that actually thought they did to begin with

Killer Games Dont Make Killer Kids

Her research, which involved analyzing newspaper coverage and FBI statistics detailing trends on youth crime, found that in the 10 years after the release of Doom— and many other brutal-sounding titles — juvenile homicide arrest rates in the United States fell 77%.

Hmmm
Now Im thinking that perhaps they may even help prevent such occurences by letting the kids take out their aggression in a game

That just means you have to give the media more reason to keep them working on the actual news; Like making sure the whole world knows there might a link between a game and a killing. All you have to do is brib... I mean donate some money to politicians who wishes to remain in the congress and make sure they'll blame the games every time someone is killed. Other good method is to make sure the hysterical relatives of the killed victims gets to know what to blame aside the who.

The media will be always there for you. They'll happily eat the soup you offer them via the mouths of the politicians or the relatives. The news, who everyone reads and watches, are always to be neutral, right? They can and they will make headlines of whatever some important character says and they will interview the relatives.

Who cares about the facts? The facts doesn't come to you, but the news will, whether you wanted or not. The people watching news are always keen to share the pain of a killed persons relatives, they want to hear that someone on the top hears their pain and will speak for them. The violent computer games are easy to blame, because nobody in their right mind will prevent laws from being passed that restricts the games. It's for the good of the people and nobody making the decisions is going to lose anything - They've never played games.

Once you're an important or capable person, you don't have to own the media to control the news. The media will be keenly awaiting for your comments and make lenghty news of it. Some will even pay for an exclusive.

Don't you just love the good ol' propaganda?

The only reason why my generation didn't become violent was because we were limited to vector-graphic based games.

According to the APA, "the jury is still out":
http://www.apa.org/science/psa/sb-anderson.html

Short and sweet version: It can make border-line violent children go over the edge, and make violent children more violent, but its unlikely that a good kid will turn bad with reasonable playing time on violent games.

Sort of like anything we get pleasure from, some can control "it", and some can't.

Does the phrase "correlation does not prove causation" ever come to mind with some of these twits?

Twit: I've looked at the possessions of kids who commit violent acts.  They own violent video games.  Ergo the violent video games caused the kids to do something violent.

Do the twits not understand that a kid with violent tendencies is simply more likely to like violent video games instead of "my little pony"?

Same could be said of any music, movie, book, guns, etc.

My "favorite" of the lamebrains' notions is that anti-depressant medication causes suicides in teens.  Not that the teens with the most problems and already at highest risk of suicide would be the ones prescribed medication.  No sir, these were perfectly normal kids that took an anti-depressant drug and that drug caused their suicide, therefore we should not give the drugs to kids.

Notice that the curve starts downward at the same time Doom was released.  A funny coincidence?

Same for taking away kids toy guns..   Boys like toy guns.. it is not that good of an idea to try to turn em into little girls... even tho so many of em are raised with no real man in the house anyway.
