Blues Traveler Frontman John Popper Arrested After Cops Find Weapons Cache, Drugs in His SUV

 SPOKANE, Wash.  —

Blues Traveler singer and harmonica player John Popper was arrested after the vehicle he was riding in was clocked going 111 mph, the Washington State Patrol said Wednesday.

Popper, 39, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 90 near the Spokane/Lincoln county line, the Washington State Patrol said.

Inside the black Mercedes SUV, officers found a cache of weapons and a small amount of marijuana, the Patrol said. A police dog searched the vehicle, finding numerous hidden compartments containing four rifles, nine handguns and a switchblade knife. Authorities also found a Taser and night vision goggles. The vehicle was seized.

Popper, who lives in Snohomish, Wash., is the owner of the vehicle, which was being driven by Brian Gourgeois, 34, of Austin, Texas, said state patrol Trooper Jeff Sevigney. The vehicle also had flashing emergency headlights, a siren and a public address system, the Patrol said.

"Popper indicated to troopers that he had installed these items in his vehicle because (in the event of a natural disaster) he didn't want to be left behind," the Patrol said in a news release. He also told officers he collected weapons, the Patrol said.

The two men were booked administratively into the Adams County jail and released on their own recognizance. Authorities plan to charge them with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Gourgeois will also face a charge of reckless driving, the Patrol said.

Popper did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment Wednesday night.

Popper achieved fame as a harmonica player and frontman for Blues Traveler. The band won a Grammy award in 1996 for the song "Run-around," which Popper composed.

Popper recently formed a group called The John Popper Project with DJ Logic, which released an album in 2006 and is scheduled to go on the road later this month.

what sucks is all those guns will be confiscated because they are related to a "drug charge" and probably will not be returned to their lawful owner  and be destroyed

Perhaps there is something to consider here. Since booze and weapons don't mix, at least as far as responsible folks are concerned, there is no reason to figure drugs and weapons will be a good mix either. If the individual is convicted of a felony the weapons will not be returned since a convicted felon cannot own or posess weapons.

Driving in excess of 100 MPH with drugs in the car and a stash of weapons doesn't really give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the individuals maturity. They may not be responsible enough to have the weapons if they can't behave any better than that.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I dont disagree with anything here,  drugs + guns = bad, alcohol + guns = bad,  same as cars and boats.   I guess I feel bad for the guns.  They didnt do nuthin to nobody, just innocent victims that were just along for the ride.  Who speaks for them?  I just hate to see them destroyed,  better to give'em to me or sell them to responsible people :D

I wonder what his reason for the hidden compartments is. Seems to me that secreting away weapons in a vehicle, besides the prospect of a theft, is somewhat nefarious.

That said, I've transported my handguns in my pick-up many times but always under the passenger seat to comply with the 'out of reach' law. Building secret compartments for firearms could be construed as to facilitate smuggling.

If this goes to court it will be an intresting case.

You get the impression Popper is a survivalist type. The weapons shown tend to be live off the land/SHTF types. Hunt for light game, some riot control protection, etc. His references to the lights and siren etc. of course would validate that..

The SUV is just equipped for the day the ballon goes up :noid
