The staffel insignia is usually on the cowling and the personal one under the cockpit, so I figured thats what this was.
Many Staffeln insignia will be seen under the cockpit - few had 'personal emblems'.
4./JG 53 insignia (Geshwader, Gruppe, Staffel):
The Ace of Spades / Geschwader insignia is normally found on the nose - the 'Bear' / Gruppe symbol (rare) would be found mid-range near the SC intake for example and the 'Top Hat' / Staffel symbol (some what rare) would be found under the cockpit.
