I'm heading to Germany next week, with a side trip to Holland. I'm taking the whole family to Germany, and wifey and I will leave for Amsterdam along the way to celebrate our 5th anniversary. Any suggestions for places there to visit?

BTW, my trip a couple months ago to Ohio, I visited the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, OH per recommendations I got here, well worth it. Also, my trip to the BB Texas in Houston was also an O'club suggestion, and was also fantastic, so don't let me down.

Are you driving? And how long are you staying? What would be some points of interest?
There are many many fine places in Germany, but some more info would be nice

I concur,..leave the family in Germany.

Where at in Germany you headed. I spent four years there. Hiedleberg is good, theres a cool technical museum in Mannhiem i think it has WW2 aircraft, old cars, a submarine you can walk through (Landemuseum für Technik und Arbeit) or at least it did 10 years ago..Munich is a good place to visit.
Also the Black Forrest region, South West Germany near France lots of stuff to see..

I've only been to Berlin, but it was a great experience. Spent 5 nights there on a shoe string budget with my fiance a couple of years back - it's easily our best holiday.

Loads to see, especially if you like museums and of course the Cold War/WWII history is all around you, including the shrapnel scarred buildings hiding amongst the slick new developments.

BTW, I AM leaving the kids in Germany, sorry if I didn't clarify that.

The wife and I are hitting Amsterdam, and we have very compatible interests in Der Wallen (colloquially known as the 'red light district').

1 tip if your walking around amsterdam (looling like a tourist)

split your money up don't keep everything in 1 pocket
at the moment amsterdam is a training area for Romanian
Pickpocket gangs

other than that there's plenty to "SEE & SMOKE"

We're not really interested in any of the mari-ju-ana stuff in Holland, heck, we live in Oregon. If we really wanted, we could get all of that we wanted.

But it's just not our bag.

Dunno how much time I'll spend in Germany as a proper tourist, we're visiting family there. I'll be in Westfalia, specifically in a town called Verl (just outside of Gutersloh). I lived there when I was a kid, haven't been back in 12 years.

We have a rental car, though.

Back in the early '70 I use to go to a place called Griechische Kapelle in Wiesbaden. I just loved it there.

In Amsterdam:

Anne Frank house is a must, if your kids are old enough, have them read the book before you get there.

Zaanse Schans is a great trip, about 20 minutes out of town by train, you can tour inside windmills. Really neat little area with a few shops. Just tell any train ticket seller you want to go where the windmills are.

Red Light district is a must, but seeing it once is enough. Kind of scummy.

Have dinner down in the Leidseplain part of Amsterdam.

Walk down the Dam to Dam square, straight out from central station.

Be careful of pickpockets and thieves on the train.

Those are a couple of ideas.

Bielefeld is in Westphalen, WW2 airfield, and today an active sports airfield.
One of the household friends lives there, so I'll ask about.
If you want to take the road to some major city, beware, it's quickly a days drive. Berlin is cool, and so is Hamburg and Munchen. I guess Bayern would be my favourite, but again, it's quite far.
