Nearly forgot [ok I did forget, just remembered]. Check to see if a file named flaps.wav is in your Aces High/sounds directory. If it's not there, you won't get any flaps sound. Another possibility is you've got the volume sliders set too high. Just the engine running will blanket out the flaps sound. I use AKWabbits sounds, along with half-a dozen others. The flaps sound is loud enough to be heard even with the engine running.
Aces High doesn't use the sliders at ALL to control volume. The default volume is the sound's, not your settings in volume control. If you want to change the volume, and keep it there, you have to open the volume control before every flight. Don't change anything, just open and close it. It's a known bug. Personally, I just increase or decrease the sound volume in a wav editor so it sounds good.
Goldwave is a little ham-handed, but it works great.
