F4U-1D/1C question
« on: February 09, 2000, 08:53:00 AM »
For those of you that have flown the F4U in WB's how does it compare?

Does the AH F4U handle and perform more like the real plane.

Can someone maybe list the pro's and con's of the plane for me as compared to WB.

I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Can't talk about the real plane .. but the AH Hog has a way better low speed handling than the WB one .. e.g less torque nicer stall characteristic...
I think the AH Hog is a way more stable platform than the WB Hog too and also it seems to hold it's E better.

I've not overstressd the WB Hog thou .. that can happen to you in AH.

But well i have not too much experience with WB...

Performance is very similar, however, our F4U more accurately lives up to the name "Ensign Eliminator".

Torque is better in our game IMHO....if your stalled out, hangin by a thread, and ya need to roll somewhere quick- slap a little bit of rudder, gun the throttle a couple a times...you'll be headed in a different direction.

Trick is, to keep control while doing it

Rebel hit the nail on the head.  I actually got into an inverted flat spin with it! (Once! )

The F4U is quite nice in AH now.  It has reasonably good low-speed handling, but doesn't turn too well at low speed.  The plane holds E well and rolls well at speed.  I find it a decently stable gun-platform, although the D model doesn't get bounced around when firing as bad as the C Hawg does.

I haven't flown the WB version in years, so I can't compare.

However, a word of warning.  Don't try any fancy hammer-heads or anything.  The torque in this thing will spin you before you get close, and you might not be able to recover.  I have been doing some offline testing recently (While I wait for my money order to reach HTC.) and I have more than once gotten into NASTY spins.  In one instance I spun bad and was unable to recover... from 8k!  I tried everything, including power-off.  I did get control near th end, but I was too low and slow to pull out.  If you do spin it and can't recover immediatly, TURN OFF THE ENGINE.  There is no way to recover the plane with that huge torque monster spinning you around.

Lephturn-

Next time, drop your gears

Also, you need to add 1/4 stick forward, half opposite rudder, and then wait.

Hmm... I've never tried dropping my gear for spin recovery.  I'll check it out.

Oh, and I normally do recover the Hog just fine, but it is possible to get into the odd REALLY nasty spin that seems to be much tougher to get out of.

took a while till i remembered to PULL on the stick for inverted spin recovery

but still the HOG ROCKS!
