Dar Change for Bombers
« on: March 21, 2007, 07:48:05 PM »
After reading the 10 page thread on the pros and cons of bombers and players problems with shooting them down I have a suggestion.

Make bombers show up differently on dar so that fighter pilots can make the decision to commit the time and effort to hunt buffs. At that point the fighter pilot will sound a bit more silly than the current round of complaints if he decides to up based on seeing buff dar icons 3 sectors away and dosent take an appropriate buff killer and get 20k or more enroute. CV commanders will know whats enroute and fuballers will know if their fun is about to be carpet porked back at their home base.

Germany knew the bombers were coming every clear day and from what source. Why hide them on dar in AH2 if we are playing for realism? Just means bomber pilots and their hunters will have to get a bit more commited to their roles. I thought german radar could tell the differnce between bombers and fighters near the end of the war???????????<---I could be wrong on this one....:huh

That's a very miniscule view of the virtual world, outbreak. Especially considering that the presence of the bombers implies your airfield is about to be shut down, or your CV about to be sunk, and you can't climb fast enough to stop them. Bombers at alt can cross a 25 mi sector in less than 5 minutes. Meanwhile, you'll take 10 minutes to climb up to them, by which time they're outside icon range in front of you, have already dropped, and are RTB.

EDIT: Bustr, hate to say it, but you stole my idea! :lol

Krusty,

If I saw a buff dot on dar just at it's own feild moving slowly outbound, I would say to myself easy pickins outbound. Then I would up a TA152,  A9, or A8 with a big gun package and climb on wep to be waiting above the buffs.

It would be akin to all countires CV visible on dar to everyone. But I'm just pointing out allied bomber streams were expected and german fighters had ample warning to get in position. Since all planes show up as red or green dots, why not adjust the dot so we can tell if its a buff or a fighter.

At this point if said buff killing complainer cannot use fore thought to his ride selection and wep to his climb advantage before he engages...well...we can respond to his whine with a big round of "DBD"....Dumb Buff Doodler.....:noid

Honestly if I could use dar to track buffs I would spend more time flying bomber interceptor missions. As it is I hate loitering around waiting for them over hot areas.

Should a formation of buffs cast the dar bar of three airplanes instead of one like it currently does?

Hrm... even fighters that close rarely make 3 separate dots on dar.

What about a new "dot"? It's in the shape of an arrow, 3 pixels at the base, 2 pixels "tall"? It would point in the direction of the bombers based on radar.

It wouldn't be to scale, but then neither are the other "dots". It just gives you an idea of what's coming.

Only a few days ago I read an article that said that in mid '44, since the Luftwaffe was ignoring US fighters, that the US staged a fake bomber raid where US fighters were the "bombers" escorted by other fighters. The Luftwaffe came up and was shocked!

So apparently the Luftwaffe radar was able to detect patterns of formation, with speed, but not actual a/c signatures.

Greetings,

I think this is a great idea.  Back in the ol' days of AW, buffs and fighters had different radar signatures.  I used to look for the buff stream and up the A8 instead of the pony if in the mood to hunt buffs.

Regards,

In AW didn't we call that area buff alley? Way in the back of each land? I remember some nights upping in an A8 or later in a A9 or 47D-11 to 20K and flying circles back their waiting for the buffs. Half the time I made lonely but specatcular lawn dart holes because I was so excited to see a buff I dove as fast as I could at it.....oooops........ :D

Not to hijack and i'm not sure if this was even possible but....

What if the actual dar bar indicated altitude by density of color.

For instance the dar is full in a sector.

Cons from 1k to 8k show as light red or light green.   +

Cons from 8k to 15k show as a darker red or darker green. -

Cons from 15k + show as the darkest red or darkest green. =

+++----------==

So in the above example you could see that most cons are in the 8 to 15k alt.

in WWII you could not tell the difference on dar between a bomber formation and a fighter formation... they were "expected" due to the fact they were at war.. you should expect that in AH there will be high bombers inbound and take the actions to stop them if you care...
erich heartman said in hs book the best thing about fighting the US on the few days that he did in the south (the us was flying out of Italy) was that they came like clockwork every day right on time :)
if we start marking bombers differently pople would sit in a 110 with its 4 A2A morter rounds and 30mm because it would be just to silly looking for the odd man out.
