Am I Warping?
« on: October 11, 2000, 08:32:00 PM »
Have noticed in several head ons that I take hits AFTER the other guy has passed by.  We both shoot, I dont get hit but as we go past I hear strikes and get damage.  Is this an indication that Im warping?

You may not be warping but there is a big lag between what each of your front ends are seeing.

Hi tssfka,
The way I usually decide if it is me is to watch other planes. If you see an isolated "shift in position" by a particular player I assume it means he may be warping. If several planes "re align" at the same time I take that as an indication that it is probably me.

Question.... Is this correct?

What's a good reading here? Usually a flat line in one window with an occassional spike under 20 ms in the other 0 to 100 window. I assume lower is better but should they be flat? Does each spike represent a lag or shift of some kind in game play? What's a bad con read?

thanks

Even with a fantastic connection, there will always be "delayed damage".  It is a function of network lag.  You shoot what you see on your FE, and he shoots what he sees on his FE.  The damage gets sent after he hits you on his FE, to the server, that then relays that damage to your client.  It's not an indication that you are warping.

Don't worry, if you are warpy, I'm sure you'll hear about it in the arena pretty quick.

Thx Lehpturn,

Sounds logical.  Guess HOs are the most critical times for damage display as they have the highest closing rates and hence less time for the server to let you know youve been killed.  Guess I better just try and get better at my HO gunnery and let the other guy wonder about warping

Your best bet is to learn how to avoid the HO's altogether, and turn them into and angles or energy advantage.

I wrote a bit about it here: http://users.andara.com/~sconrad/hodefense.htm

Have a peek at it.
