Was there a reason that a 20mm wasnt placed in the nose of the 205?It had the DB605 so you would think it would fit.Unless something else got in the way.

The design came from the C.202, which stemmed directly from the C.200.

The c.200 was a radial-engined aircraft. They took that and bolted a DB601 directly to it (of course changing the cowl to fit). It was never designed from the get-go to have a nose gun. When it was up-engined, they had guns in the wings, and removed those and put 20mms in.

Now the G.55 was a totally new design, not simply an engine swap, so it was designed from the start to have a hub-gun, like the 109s did.

Just a matter of the design at the time I guess.

Don't you sometimes wish that there was yet one more arena.

One where you could take say a c.205 and "modify" it.

What would it handle like with 3 cannons, one of em nose mounted.?
Kind of a Aces High meets Crimson Sky's sorta place where you could spend time modifing, tweaking, adjusting things on planes.

What if you took a p38's 4 mg's out and replaced them with 2 more 20mm?
Or a pair of 37mm's? Would that baby be buff or what?

A "what if" arena with a plane shop.  Where you could take standard componants, wings, wheels, engines, fuze's and build something totally off the wall. Totally you, and unique. Then go fly the beast!

Yeah Yeah I know, I'm asking for the moon and stars.

Pipz, the .205 we have in the game, is the .205V Veltro. It was designed a simple upgrade of the .202, and, originally (Series I) it has the same armament of the .202 (in fact, you can choose 2 7.7 mm in hangar, if you want). Soon it was decided to upgrade the armament and the fastest and easiest way was to replace the 2 wing MGs with 2 20mm cannons (on the Series III). As Krusty stated, it was just a matter of providing the Regia Aeronautica with a quick upgrade for the Folgore, without having to spend too much time on the design table.

In fact, the real .205 was the C.205N Orione (Orion) a partial re design of the Veltro, with an increased wing surface and a new armament, to be compliant with the specifics Regia Aeronautica had issued for a new fighter plane. 2 prototypes were built, 1 with 1 MG151/20 and 4 12.7 Safat MGs, 1 with 3 MG151/20 and 2 Safat and 1 of the cannons, in this configuration, was mounted in the hub. They were put on trials with the G.55 and the Re.2005, and, at the end of the them, it was decided to put into mass production the G.55 and the Re.2005 (in lesser numbers.. the Germans insisted that the RA should standardize its fighter line with the G.55), while the Macchi would have had to continue with the C.205V production to provide the RA with a front line fighter, waiting for the Fiat and Reggiane production lines to supply enough new planes for the fighter squadrons.

Mebbe the Italians weren't much into the "centralized armament" philosophy. Come to think of it, doesn't most of all ITA planes use wing armament (as primary weapon)?

Not at all, Kweassa...

Pratically all the Italian fighters always have armament in the nose at the beginning of the war: CR.42, C.200, G.50 all were equipped with 2 nose mounted 12.7 MGs....

Only in the latter years additional armament was added, in the wings, this time. But basically all the fighters had armament in the nose. Always.

P-38 with Merlin engines.  The air force specifically FORBADE anyone from putting a Packard merlin in the P-38, though Johnson & Co had already made the drawings for the conversion.  The air corps wanted all the merlins in P-51s, apparently.  One does wonder why the brits didn't do it, though, given they are the ones who put a merlin in the -51 originally.

So.  P-38L with two Merlin engines and three Hizookas.

I'd fly it.

I think that the fuel tank is located behind the engine preventing the cannon installation.

Not exactly. Main fuel tanks are located in the lower part of the fuselage and in wing roots, just ahead of the cockpit and below the MGs/ammo cartridge complex. I don't think it would have been impossible to place the cannon there, but I'm not sure... Anyway, in the second C.205N there was a hub cannon and the general arrangement of the internals shouldn't have been much different from the .205V. But, again, I'm not sure, 'cause I don't know exactly where the tanks were in the Orione.

The fuselage of the C.205N seem to be lenghtened considerably if compared to the C.205V and the extension seem to be in the area where the cannon is supposed to be. Below is a picture linked from Ubi forums showing the difference.

Well, my reference says:

"Length: 29 ft 0.5in (205N, 31ft 4in)"

So I guess that's right. The 205V was the modified airframe of the 202. The 205N had a NEW airframe, rather than just bolting the old engine on the new frame, but no 205Ns saw any service.

Cc Gripen, now that I think about it, you're right, I have that picture too, it's from Squadron signal's volume about the 202.
