7600GT SLI and texture >256

Have a,

ASUS A8N SLI DELUX MB  (SLI@ x8)
3500+AMD CPU
2 7600GT's in SLI mode
2GIG RAM ddr400 in ddr mode
Acer 2423 (24' LCD Monitor wide screen)@1280x 960

I can not use greater than 256 textures due to lock ups, especialy in GVs

I get artifacts, then lock, sometimes I can recover temporarily by going back to the decktop for a sec or two.

At 512 with nothing extra, no anti-anything and max performance on video selected, it is a no go.

However, at 256 textures, I seem to be able to increase video to only performance, add some other enhancements, a little here and there and it is ok.

The graphic quality now is about as good as 512 tex with no "bells and whistles".

Krusty told me to check voltage and temps.  They are great!  The Voltages are about .01-.1 over standard and the temps on the 7600 GT .never gets above 51c, the MB 41c.

My Questions?

Is AH too demanding for this system?

Is the only SLI x8 for the an8 SLI Delux the problem?

Do I have a driver problem?  I have Nvdia drivers for the whole MB, so I can't uninstall drivers from the control panel (they are all together).

I have been deleting the graphic drivers from the device driver panel when I installed 84.66, among others.

The game is really great and the graphic super.  I just expected more from this CPU and graphics card.

Can any one lend some advise here and help us 7600GT users?

I forgot,

The Ms error message after a nasty lock up sez, "thread caught in device driver"

What ever that means?

Gee, Mr Fork,

At least I know I am not alone!  Thanks.

Another thing that peplexes me is that the game only shows me using 40meg of video mem when I have 256megs in SLImode.
