3D settings

Ok here goes...

Windows Vista Home Basic  (regretting it)
Asus P5PE-VM MB
Nvidia Geforce 6800 GS/XT  AGP8X 256MB DDR3
(still guessing at the proper driver to have running)
Pentium D 915 2.8Ghz 4MB cache Dual Core
Onboard Soundcard (if I install a driver that gives me sound, windows explorer wont let me into Control panel)
1024 RAM
100GB HD

I'm sure most Video cards have the same options more or less.

Antialiasing----Application controlled? 2x 4x ?
Antisotropic filtering--- 2x 4x ?
Conformant texture Clamp---OpenGL? Use Hardware? Off?
Extension Limit--What does AH need this set at?
Tri Linear?
Triple buffering?

the list goes on....

Some have the option of Application controlled.. Does AH Control these?
I don't see much change if any when I change these settings. I'm seeing more 1-2 sec freezes and white squares before trees show up than I ever did with my old system. (alot to do with sound driver I think, but I don't expect Skuzzy or anyone else to fix an Asus crap sound/Vista compatibility issue)

Are you supposed to frig with these until your happy with what you see or is there some kind of guideline for AH.
I don't see any mention of these options in my hardware manuals and I would just like to know that I'm getting the most out of the game that my system will allow.

Any input would be appreciated.
I'm tired of guessing and googling for things that are over my head.

Also..I just noticed that ingame, my VidMem is 529.0
and 3.1 MB used.   3.1??? :huh

Try,

Get rid of antialiasing.

Antisotropic filtering 2x, makes builds and stuff look normal from extreme angles.

However the two above "sampling" of should be enabled.

Conformant texture Clamp---Ah no use open GL Use Hardware? ON?
Extension Limit--What does AH need this set at? None
Tri Linear? Yes
Triple buffering? Yes

There are a bunch more settings to use to opimize AH.

Try the read me file in your Nvidia folder.

Or down load Riva Tuner.  It is a better cotrol panel for Nvidia cards.  You can right click on all the settings for info and recomended settings.

Also set the textures for 256.  It works for me w/ 2 7600gts in SLI.  Then you can set the picture qual to performance and get the same quality as  512 and max performance without the lock ups.

Hope this helps, I am still learning these graphic settings.

Lets face it AH isnt the prettiest looking of games.

With the hi res pack and at least 4 x AA with all the in game settings maxed there is a big difference.  The game looks much better!

If its performance your after these are the first things to tone down but if your system is good enough.....
