With regard to your lockups, i was locking up for a year and found the problem was in the sound settings. I put up a detailed post on 11/08 with the solution. Check it out and maybe it will work for you also.
It apparently has worked for others.
Good luck, that freezing up gets old real fast and ruins the game.
