Joystick not detect after changing directx versions
« on: January 16, 2001, 03:11:00 AM »
After trying out Directx8 and finding that it had stability issues with AH and RW.  I downloaded a utility that uninstalled it and I then reinstalled Directx7a which hadn't given me any problems.  Everything seemed to be fine till I fired AH up and realized my joystick wasn't responding.  A little annoyed I checked my windows settings and found out my joystick wasn't listed on the game controllers control panel.  OK I thought it just got reset.  But when I try to add a device to the list I get the error

"Gameport or gameport drivers not properly configured, consult device manager"

I've tried all the usual things to add a new hardware device from auto detect to adding the device manually.  Any ideas on how to get passed this would be greatly appreciated.

If it matters some specs

Dell Dimension P3 500
128 megs ram
Directx7a (formerly Directx8)
Soundblaster Live Value (the joystick is plugged into this board, yes I tried reinstalling the drivers for this)
Diamond Viper V770 TNT2
80th FS "Headhunters"
I blame mir.

Get the latest drivers for your soundcard and install 'em, assuming your gameport is on the soundcard.  I've had similar problems, especially with VIA chipset mainboards.  I game up and bought a USB stick.

Just one more reason that USB is where it's at for sticks IMHO.

I had the same problem Soulyss... and I did reinstall all the sound card drivers and it still wouldn't go away. Must have been some registry issues with the way that utility unistalls DirectX. I had to format and do a clean install. Also... run if you used the same utility I did to try to unistall DirectX 8... you probably get all kinds of weird stuff when you run dxdiag.

Sorry to say, it was format c: for me too when I tried DX 8.0. Back to DX 7.0a w/o any problems.

Go to the MS website and get Regclean.exe  and use it after DX Buster, there are approximately 110 registry errors left after the uninstall.

You can also revert your system back to DX 5.0 by using the Win 98 System Configuration Utility.
