Do you have a gamepad to usb converter?  If not, for the price of one you could get a cheap flightstick like the st290pro and have all the minium functions you'd need for AH, with much more precise control.

As far as I am aware, pretty much any controller with a usb interface can be configured for AH.  If you have a usb interface, you can just go into the AH controller map and start assigning functions to it.  You can learn more about mapping your controller here.

As a trainer I have run into new players using a gamepad as a controller.  It is only a temporary controller solution though.  Without a joystick, there is very little hope of competeing with players using a basic flight stick over the long hull.

Saitek makes a USB controller/joystick that looks like a nintendo or play station type controller.  I've seen it at Wal-Mart.

I have been using the Saitek 990 Gamepad as an alternative to my stick, it is middleing in GV's but pretty poor in aircraft. The range of movement of the joysticks doesnt allow for precise control when flying. The only  reason I use it at all is a joystick on my desk at work would look pretty conspicuous. :D
