For real or a fraud?
« on: April 03, 2007, 10:53:58 AM »
There is a guy claiming to be a LW ace doing the airshow circuit in the USA. Have any here come across him? His name is Gottfried Dulias.

I stumbled across a thread here about him, http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=206588&highlight=Dulias

There also a thread at the 12 O'clock High board, http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=1947

What do you all think? Is he or is he not for real?

There were so many German 5+ aces that it will be very difficult to disprove. I don't think anyone has a complete list of German aces. Herr Dulias is not on Kacha's list of Experten at least.

Think you had to have 20 kills to be a German ace.

Not really. There are sub-20 kills pilots regarded as "Experten".

I think later in the war they changed the number because so many German pilots had been flying for so long.  The ones with less then 20 and listed as aces probably got those before the rules changed, I would guess.

I would like more info on this if anyone has it.

This is the best website I know of for info on luftwaffe aces: http://www.luftwaffe.cz

I don't think the LW had any official rules of when you were an Experten, and all pilots with 5 victories are considered aces, something that carried over from the Great War. The only rules I know of were regarding decorations. I.e. in the east you had to get a number of kills to get the iron cross; in the west they used a "point" system for awards rather than just kills.

I could have sworn I read it took 20 kills to be a German ace, but I have no way of backing that up.  Thanks for the linky.:aok

he apparently wrote a book called "Another Bowl of Kapusta" about his flying in the Luftwaffe and his time as a guest of the Russians.   i'm sure the details would be easy enough to corroborate.  i say give the old guy a break.   personally, i'd be ashamed to challenge him on it.  i'll bet he's for real.

I thought the Germans used a point system or was that only used for medals?
