Ammo storage

Does anyone know if it is safe to store ammo in rent-a-storage area? Since it can get rather hot during summer, I’m worried about detonation due to heat. Also ammo is surplus with age ranging from 20-50 years which could contribute to detonation.

It won't get that hot to detonate in a storage room. Place it at floor level with some space around it for ventilation to keep it a bit cooler. I've stored ammo in Southern AZ. for over a decade with no issues. Keep it from getting wet and youll be fine. Military ammo is also sealed each round to help avoid problems. Keep it in the original sealed case if possible. If you've opened the case use a sealing style can like a regular ammo can to store it. Get some silica gell packets and toss them inside with it.

Should be safe to do it, but many storage rental places have rules prohibiting it. Check your contract first to make sure it's ok. Some places will have a clause that if they find ammo being stored they reserve the right to confiscate everything in the space. I found that in my storage rental contract I signed to store some of my father-in-laws house hold goods when he moved out here five years ago.

It's probably illegal...but I don't care. They have to breach lock in order to look ...

So far, great advice!

Russian, read the fine print at the rent-a-closet and make sure the container you use is secure. MidwayUSA.com sells MIL-spec ammo boxes on the cheap. You can get SAW boxes, mortar canisters, .30 and .50 boxes. They've got more uses than I can think of, and they'll store any ammo you want for literally years without fail. At last check (5 mins ago) the .50 cal box is a mere $6 ($7 for the 10" box), .30 cal is $5. Right now they're out of 40mm boxes and SAW boxes, but they do have a 120mm mortar case 12x6x32" for $10.
