RAF Roundels?
« on: April 04, 2007, 10:12:25 PM »
How do you know which roundel to use?
I've seen a few profiles use different types.  I'm confused.

Anyone here have a simple explaination?

Go to the following site.  It gives a pretty good explaination

You are really only dealing with type A, type B, and type C roundels in AH.
Although you will run across occassions when a variation is used or a different size will be used.

Dates -
Up to mid 1942 - Type A
After mid 1942 - Type C

What the roundels on the linked page don't show -
The Type A roundels used a slightly brighter shade of red than the Type C.

RGB values I use for the red -
Type A - 188, 32, 7
Type C - 152, 32 , 6

Just about all will use Type B upper wing roundels, apart from aircraft assigned to 2 TAF after Jan 45, they used Type C.

good guide for fighters -
If camo is brown / green  - more than likely Type A and B
If camo is grey / green - more than likely Type C and B (bearing in mind 2 TAF)

BUT - There are instances of brown / green camo aircraft with type C roundels.
Photographs are the best guide.
