Windowed mode
« on: April 07, 2007, 10:36:58 AM »
Am I the only one who cringes when an application wants to take over my monitor? I would much prefer to be able to have AH windowed as I run multi-headed, and my PC only uses about 50% of it's CPU cycles for AH.

I know there is a windowed mode for debugging, but it isn't resizable (too small to be useful).

First off you really don't want anything else running when AH is open.

Granted there are guys who tab out to read the bbs while climbing their bombers to alt, etc. But as a general rule you want to run AH totally clean.

Second, you need every inch of visibility you can get. If I could afford a wall sized monitor you can bet I'd have one. So why would you want to size it down to a window? If you really need to hit the desktop, alt tab out and back.

Yes I cringe when software does things I don't want/expect it to do.
However in this case IMO your expectations are out of line. Full blown flight simulators shouldn't run in a window. And you shouldn't be trying to do anything else while running one.

Your wife may put on makeup in the car on the way to work in the morning. But you wouldn't expect her to do it if she was driving an indy car at top speed would you? There is a time & place for Multi tasking, but AH isn't it.

Fraps for one, doesn't run worth S*** in anything other than windowed mode, unless you're willing to trade off smoothness while recording. I.E. Slideshow. Would make filmmaking a lot easier. Just my opinion.

I think you'll find most people making films use fraps to record from the AH Flim Viewer. Did you know you can record your flights and play them back, trying many view options before recording a segment with fraps?

You'll find that there is a reason for most things being the way they are, but still a method to do most anything you want.

Sort of an off topic tip: you can improve your films' smoothness by recording your AHFs running at 1/2 speed or less, with fraps, and then speeding them up in whatever application you use for post-processing.
