Okay....I concede the point...it's not really about race.  My thinking was kind of muddled when I posted this morning anyways.  Been suffering from insomnia this week and I'm still not over it.

Yet, there's part of that argument that I can't but believe has some relevance.  If success can breed arrogance in an individual....then why NOT in a class or race?  That was certainly the case in Southern white slave owners prior to the Civil War.

In modern times, our differences, whether urban versus rural or conservative versus liberal or white versus black, are clung to so blindly by many that they no longer even make the attempt at being fair or objective.  

Case in point:  The antipathy between liberal and conservative has become so vitriolic within the last ten years that it is rendering constructive political discourse almost impossible.  The demonization of opposing opinions is painfully evident on these boards and in the media and on college campuses and in churches and political action forums and you name it.  

Perhaps we need to coin a new term to describe it;  I certainly can't come up with anything adequate.

it does seem to me that amongst a good portion of our population the opposing view must be invalidated at all costs, that a person's differing opinion must be received as a personal affront.  I enjoy getting folks worked up for sport and I find white folks to be the easiest to tweak.  most other folks simply don't take the bait.  around here (generally speaking) we work around or with the jabs, attempting to rebutt with brilliance and humor.  you garnish extra points by clever usage use of the double entendre when possible.  speaking in generalities the hispanics are especially good at this.  we spend a lifetime perfecting the skill.  sadly it's lost in the written word, working much better where there is an oral tradition.

I see what you're getting at, Storch. But, I would digress that there is a huge difference in a real-time, face to face conversation in a streetfront cafe, and carrying on a conversation on the BBS.

In RL, you have but seconds to respond to a argument, to react in the way you wish the argument to go. If your temper's flaring, and you can't get it under control, shows a sign that you are losing said argument.

However, here, we can read posts' at leisure, drink a cup of coffee, Put away 2-3 beers, whatever, while we sit and think of our most clever response. We have time to get our emotions under control, and devote our energies to which strategy we wish to follow in our argument, or what tone we wish to set.

IMHO, I can't understand why posters come on the boards and just spill out the first thing that comes to mind...When you have time on your side, use it.

firstly let's call it a discussion or a debate not an argument.  by choosing the word argument you are making my point.  as for your suggestion, that would be the intelligent way, to pause.  the beauty of the multifaceted debate is that you are dealing with a few topics at once and you bounce from topic to topic.  with regard to needing a pause, you have that in a café discussion as there are usually three or four participants plus the guy that walks up says his piece orders his coffee drinks it and scoots.  it's no fun 1 v 1.

If we're talking about incitement, I would quite like a stop put to things like this which appear every time that individual makes a post. this is an example but there are plenty like it in these BBS

It's nonsense of course, but it's crass and adds nothing to any debate. Its like me having a quote " Geoge Bush is a murderous fascist baby killer" every time I made a post!

Aside from that, there's something insufferably pompous about long quotes every time you post, although the funny ones are great!
