More Hard lock ups, and problem solved part 2
« on: April 07, 2001, 08:04:00 AM »
Again, more hard lock ups, 3 to 4 in an hours time.  What I did to solve the problem was the following that you may try if you are experiencing the same as I...

GO TO:
Control Panel
System
Select GRAPHICS tab
Adjust Advanced Graphics down one notch, to 75%.

Worked for me.

Well, worked for AWHILE...ended up locking up again...disabled the Video Bios cache per HT discussion, and so far (crosses fingers) no lock ups.

Video bios cacheing is not useful in today's systems.  Windows doesn't use it, so it makes no performance difference.  It can cause some problems as well.

Just disable it.

Where does one find this Video bios cache?  I jhave been locking up frequently recently.  Of course, since I am pretty new here, recent is an awkward problem.  My lockups the past few days see to coincide with tuning RW though.
More than once, I have noticed than when I go to desktop there are multiple instances of RW open. I thought that might have been causing *my* particular problem..

RW has been causing problems for lots of folks, myself included.

Basically, I've stopped using it.

If you want to try to get it working, be sure RW is set up to use "wav" recording.  Direct Sound recording seems to cause many problems.

Video bios cacheable or shadow is something you find in your BIOS setup.  Press F-10 usually, or something like that to get into your BIOS setup.  Poke around in the different menus and you may find it.  If video cacheing or shadowing is enabled, you should disable it.

Often times RW can make your system seem to lock up when tuning a channel, or if the host leaves.  Wait for as long at 30 seconds before assuming you have locked up.
