Weird problem.....
« on: February 17, 2001, 12:09:00 AM »
Nuthin to do with AH.....

Ok, PC is:

AMD 900Mhz
256Mb Ram (PC133)
Asus A7V Mb
Asus V7700 GF2 GTS
SB Live!
Maxtor 40Gb HDD
PCI ISDN TA
Etc.

Running Win ME.

This PC is only a few weeks old.  Had no problems with the win install, everything worked fine (with awesome frame rates  )

Then I installed Roger Wilco (the one with the gator.com crap with it) and the problems started.

First thing I did was uninstall the gator.com bollocks.  Deleted the directory, emptied recycle bin.  Ran regedit and searched for gator, nothing found.

The problem is as follows:

When browsing (IE4) about every 5 minutes everything stops responding.  The mouse still works but nothing else, start button doesnt respond, even keyboard shortcuts (including ALT-CTRL-DEL).  The whole PC just goes on strike for a few minutes......and then back to normal like there was nothing wrong.

It only happens when using IE.  I can play any online game you can name with no pauses or connection problems.  It also doesnt matter what I'm browsing.....java, http, whatever.  There is no distinction, it all just stops.

I've reinstalled windoze once....no effect.  I really dont wanna have to format the HDD and start from scratch.  Anyone got any ideas?

swoop have you tried uninstalling IE and reinstalling that? or how about updateing IE to the latest version to see if that works?
If not id email gozilla and ask them to send you info on how to clean sweep their crap off your computer.Gozilla is a great programme most of the time but i like you have had pages appear but all buttons are unusable.Gozilla? or IE? ive never worked it out

It's likely that when you nuked the gator com crap it took a shared DLL with it.

Re-install RW, alomg with the Gator stuff, but then type msconfig at the run prompt and disable it from starting. It'll be there, but it takes up hardly any disc space, and as long as it's not running...

If you're running a fire wall, you can block it there too.

Swoop I have been having the same problem for sometime now ;( I even upgraded IE to 5.5 to see if it would help.  Seems to have slowed things down abit but still not 100%.

My specs:
A7V
256mb pc133 ram
800mhz tbird
Asus V7700 deluxe 32mb GF GTS2
Sblive Xgamer
IBM 42gb hdd (smokin fast   )
external modem
dvd
cdrw
WIN98 NON-SE

Sometimes it is while scrolling down I get the problem in IE or if ICQ does something at the same time I am working with IE.  Other times opening another link in a new window causes the lock up.
After upgrading to DX8.0a I had to upgrade to reference drivers for the video card and that help the stablility also BUT I lost the tv in on the vid card this way

If ya have anyluck let me know!
(I need to email ASUS and complain about lack of DX8 compatible drivers for the V7700 also, if I hear anything I will post it up)

The problem is that somewhere imbedded in yer files is something that tells gator to execute, but since ya killed gator when that execute command is run your system is waiting for gator to initalize, but since you killed it its not going to so your system waits and waits..etc

reinstall RW and uninstall gator VIA add-remove programs, that may help.

Question, if you installed win me how did you end up with IE4? Should be IE 5.5
