GeforceII ultra settings???

Kbman speaks the truth, went from Ultra TNT2 32 meg card to GeForce II 32 meg card, night and day difference.  You can get a GeForce MX card for about $70 bucks these days, or a Pro for about $160.

My box shipped with a Geforce2GTS 32meg which is tweaked over 100 FPS.

Where does that fall between the MX and Pro?
If you were gonna spend $100 +/- what would you get?

Appreciate all the feedback guys !

GTS and Pro: Pro can be overclocked (both memory and chip)...other than that, not much difference from what I've heard...

Geforce MX is the best bang for that kinda buck as noted from users on this BBS.

Does overclocking a GTS have any risks?

I've got mine overclocked DMax.  Overclocking the video card GPU won't help, all modern video cards are limited by memory.  Overclocking the video card ram will help a little.  I personally have my vid card ram overclocked from 333 Mhz to 350 Mhz.  (Most video card ram on GF2s are 350 Mhz ram, so going to this setting should be within specs.)  If you are running the detonators programs like powerstrip and the "coolbits" tweak should allow this.  Asus video card users can just download their tweak utility.

Your friend will never get a good Frame rate with that card.  It is what they called a tnt2 m64, and they were junk when they were new - 2 years ago!  The fact that they are still being put into systems just goes to show just what companies will do to save a buck.  What does happen, and is even worse, is often this card is integrated onto the MB.  Often times you will NOT even have an AGP slot to upgrade the video card.  If you find that to be true your only option is to get a PCI video card.  About the only one left is the V5 5500 PCI version, but 3dfx no longer exists anymore.  Honestly if your friend does not have an AGP slot because the company has cut corners and integrated the tnt2 m64 I'd highly recommend getting a refund on the system if possible.  Usually systems that have this done use the absolute lowest quality components.  (Any chance your friend bought a Compaq?   )

Nope, worse - a HP. To make matters worse, he came home after going out to CompUSA for a GeForce 2MX to find his power supply fried...this is after spending half a day d/ling AH and a few other goodies I suggested. Mind you this is a 10+ year Mac user who bought a PC box mainly for AH.

Think I'll stay in bed tomorrow and not answer the phone

Ah, those HPs are almost as bad.  They use a non standard power supply that is only rated at 160W.  Fortunately (unlike E-machines) a standard sized power supply *should* fit without a problem.  The difference is that the HP supplies are exactly 1" shorter.  I'd put at least a 250W in there, 300W would be even better.

I hate to say it, but HP has really gone downhill lately in product quality.  They went from #1 to third worst IMO.  Only compaq and e-machines would rate worse.  The old worst on my list, Packard Bell, went out of business a couple years ago.

There are only 3 things that I will still buy from HP:  Printers, Scanners, and certain models of CD burners.  (Most of their burners are made by Sony in case you didn't know. )

I just hope he has an AGP slot...

Bloom, which are your top 3?

As a long time MAC user, I had to be bound and gagged into the PC world. I'm on Dell #2 now, a sweet 4100 running a P3 @1000 Mgz. I've found Dell to be a class act with 1st quality support. My only regret was losing Win98SE to ME.

In my experience, if you are going to go with a big OEM, go with Dell.  It's what I recommend to non-tech-savy friends and relatives who I don't want bugging me all the time.

For gaming, some of the specialist builders like Alienware or Falcon might be an interesting choice.  I don't have any experience with them personally, so I can't say.  Some of their gear gets very good ratings in magazines like Maximum PC that demand high performance and high quality.
