New tile sets rock after brightness adjustments
« on: April 15, 2007, 08:19:34 PM »
Sat down to to give the new version a test run.  Overall verdict:  rock on.

I never felt AH had a great sensation of speed after the removal of clutter overlay in AH 1 (ctrl - c, anyone?).  It feels vastly improved.  I think mostly the tile textures have the biggest effect with tree clumps, sheep, and other objects helping out.

The dense forest pockets with slight height variations give a nice semi-untiled effect (it better hides obvious patterns).  I always had the feeling of flying over a colorful landfill... now we have mini-ardennes, juicy trees. :)

Now, brightness certainly is an issue with unaltered settings.  Before the update I usually flew at a 1.25-1.4 gamma depending on the time of day.  Bumping the gamma further in this version gives a washed out effect, so I had to alter the contrast, brightness, and gamma from the desktop first.  From Control Panel > Display > Settings tab > Advanced > Color; I set them to the following:

Gamma: 1.50
Brightness:  5
Contrast:  120

I use more extreme settings for IL2, and it comes out very nice.  Bumping the contrast seems to get rid of the washed out effect.  Make sure you check "Full Screen 3D" so your desktop isnt insane bright after adjusting.

This screenshot was saved dark and ignored the settings.  I used paintshop pro and manually altered the bright/gamm/contrast settings.

Lets hope HTC consider your 2nd picture when correcting their settings.

still prefer the farmland tiles.  even after adjustments.

and you really should'nt have to go to all that work to make it non-aggrevating.

I made a couple of adjustments to make the first pic seem much "brighter" and clear to me.

Gamma: 13%
Brightness: 53%
Contrast: 42%

And found it was fantastic!

Unfortunatly, I couldn't read my taskbar anymore because it was way too bright. My "electric blue" became white, the same color as my text. If I was the only person using this computer and all I did was play AHII on it, then it would be alright.

So I'm back to these settings:

Gamma: 9%
Brightness: 50%
Contrast: 46%

Very slight changes, but taken as a whole, very dramatic.

Set it for "Full Screen 3D," not your desktop, Tex. Your desktop will be unaffected by this change.

I don't seem to have that option.

I have to use the nvidia 97.92+ drivers for my video card. Maybe they didn't add that setting?

First, dump Vista

Then everything will be fine....

Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it's Colin. - Tim Vine.

even with the brightness fixed, if that green was yellow and the trees were cacti and rocks, it would make a excellent desert...just a matter of making some nice tile sets now.
