HTC art team: Do you use 1.0 gamma for art creation?
« on: April 15, 2007, 11:09:23 PM »
would like to get a census from all who are contributing art to Aces High II especially superfly and waffle but would like to hear everyones(skinners and terrain tile artists etc) settings for when they create art and also when they view it online in Aces High if they use 1.0 gamma in the game settings (the actual AH2 graphics setup gamma) and if they use altered video card settings as well.

I think we are not all on the same page with the textures we are creating for this game. it seems across the board everyone making skins or terrains is using boosted gamma and changes to their vid card etc etc etc to the point that if you look at the skins in the game  lot of them look too bright or too dark.. etc. etc. there is no standard at all.

I would be most thankful to have info on what in game aces high gamma setting HTC uses.

I have always since the begining of AH2 used 1.0 gamma exclusively when making art  or skins and used standard unaltered setting on my video card for it because I felt using standard settings was preferable when making the art. my monitor is a high end 21" sony CRT with color correction sysytems and utilities built into the monitor so maybe the guys with lcd screens are seeing somthing different but I digress.

cheers

I always use 1.0 during "the day".   "Dawn and Dusk" around 1.33-1.47.   I have always done this with either previous CRT's and the current 19" LG LCD.

I was referring to gameplay.    I have NEVER had a "Gamma related issue" dealing DIRECTLY with any Map.    Only the "ambient time of day" has ever caused me to change gamma.

I dont know jack about jack when it comes to skinning or creating tiles.

Hell I havent even managed to photoshop anything yet LOL

All I know is what I see. If it looks good or bad or is missing something in the finished product.
Probably most of the peopel here are the same way but thats besides the point I'm about to make.

It would seem to me that if your going to do either it would make the most sense to do them at defgault settings as its probably a good guess that most people dont mess around with their monitor or video card settings.

I don’t think gamma is having an impact on skins looking too bright or too dark in the game.  The only things gamma and monitor/video card settings are going to change is the colors.  What one person sees as red on their monitor may look pink or purple to someone else.  When making skins, you have to balance the colors used on the skin – light green vs. dark green for example – with the setting in the material.txt file so the skin looks "natural" when viewed in the game.  (And check your skins at night because I have seen a skin in the game that actually glows in the dark!)  If the gamma impacts the skins and the terrains the same, then a skin that looks "natural" in brightness at one gamma setting should look "natural" at all gamma settings.

When I was making skins, I took my cues from the terrain tiles to determine sun strength and the amount of light reflection to set the skin’s brightness.  With these new darker tiles, the terrain looks as if it is overcast or cloudy – no sun shine – in the immediate area but sunny in the distance.  I know with my skins they don’t look "natural" any longer because they look like they are in full sun with too much light reflecting up on the undersides.  Changing the gamma won’t – or shouldn’t – make a difference.

What you have to do is come up with a common definition for "natural."  And with this community, that shouldn’t be any problem at all.
