HTC Connection Trouble Shooting Guide needed
« on: February 09, 2000, 10:41:00 AM »
HT & Pyro..  can u guys give us a guide for connections; trouble shooting and reccomended setups for the diffrent connect subroutines we normally use?? (eg; Cable connect setup and Modem connect setup guides)

In the good old days; when the men wuz still men; and HT's sheep wern't nearly as nervous, we had a modem setup guide for the old WB's servers, explaining server speed vs connect speed; what worked, what didn't; and a complete explanation on how to set up the modem with/without compression, error control, etc.

Also appreciated would be a recommend list of diganostic tools, and a dialouge for the interpetation of results.

This way when we experienced difficulty we could whip out the checklist and run the diagnostics; record the results and post them for comparison or pass them along to you folks so we can get a handle on this.

All this stuff; even if the problem is outside and beyond HTC control, would reflect on HTC's commitment to providing a better play platform and enchance our ability to maximize results. Nothin worse than havin some poor sod thinking HTC's servers are porked when in fact it's a problem somewhere else. Best thing to do is get together a toolkit for the player to use to find out what the problem is.. so he can direct his efforts at gettin it fixed instead of giving up in disgust because he can't figure it out.

Thanks for you ear!

 www.56k.com

has all the answers you need for your modem.
 www.regedit.com

the manual way to tweak you registry
"why have some stupid program do it for ya"

Doc's Current modem and networking settings

Fifo buffers are set to minimum. (important for stability; lose a bit of data on topend speeds but well worth it.)
Registry Dun settings have been optimized for dialup.(important)
Bindings for dialup adapter have been set for tcp/ip only.(important)
Error control is on.
Software compression is off.(don't waste time compressing)
Flow control set by hardware.(important)
make shure that Ipx and netbui are unchecked in dun settings; only have tcp/ip

thats it for now off the top of my head...

as far as cable, DSL everbody has a different carrier contact your local carrier for info.

Aol's, att's, computrash, and other large ISP's are usually the worst for connections...

Go to www.thelist.com   to find a new local ISP.

Something else to try for you modem-types is to make a second dial-up with a slower connect.  I know back in the WB modem days many people had an identical dial-up with a speed set at 19.2kbps specifically to play WB.  At the lower speeds WB still performed fine, but the lower speed connection ended up being more reliable with less packet loss.

It's worth a shot.  If you are trying to run 56k, try a 28.8 connect and test it for a night or 3 to see if it's better.
