Curious a bit about the optics. I know that a smoke screen farther away is going to appear denser...like fog in the distance. At the same time you can see thru fog/clouds that are close to you. Is the ability to zoom thru the smoke based on RL optics? I'm not much of a tanker but used the smoke for the 1st time as an "SOP" and landed 40 kills (1 reload)...I actually needed the smoke since I'd used all of em more then the ammo. No question the sherman relied on fire and manuever vs superior german armor. The firefly is not a standard Sherman since the 17 lbdr gave it tremendous "stand off" ability while the regular shermans had to get in close. I can see the tremendous advantage the smoke grenades had if the modeling we have is somewhat realistic.

Also interesting that the sherman had pretty good turret armor (and sloping)....tough nut to crack hull down and well positioned.

hehe, I have my moments.....

I'm just amazed at how effective and important the smoke launchers on the sherman are....much much more important then the gun IMO....

I'm a total tank noob, I've never had more then 15 kills or so even pure spawn camping. I was out on the rook flank in a pretty well used position roughly 1500 or so away from the rook spawn. I was under long range fire from tanks on the hills as well as engaged with tanks ull down in front and tanks spawning. Normally here I'd get 2-5 kills (assuming I didnt get popped spawning myself). This is the 1st time I used smoke both as a response to inbound fire and as a screen from the plinkers on the hill....

Basically if you use it right you've got tremendous survivability till the little buggers run out.....

I believe I was able to help with that! Glad you were able to land them, & note....you were almost on the friendly spawn where you stopped. I spawned in my tank about 200 yards from you when I came back.

The spawns are so close your under fire from the other spawn when you spawn. Without the smoke I'd have lasted 5 min instead of 50 or so....

The ability to 'Zoom' beyond smoke is of course not realistic.

I would like to see a fix to end the practice of hunkering down within a cloud of smoke and firing out without blocked optics.

It would also be nice to be able to 'blind' a position by dropping smoke right
infront of it.

I'm not sure thats exactly right. Thats why I asked the question. In the PZIV you fired smoke in front and the closer you got the more you blocked your vis on him...he could see you if your smoke was to close. The "blindness" is the refraction/reflection of light of the smoke particles. So if your closer U can see better...how much better is the question....

If you zoom in, there is no smoke whatsoever. That is not even remotely realistic.

yeah the smoke thing has gotten out of control...wasnt it always in the past you fired smoke at your enemy to blind them? over the last few months it seems to have changed and now a huge smoke cloud conceals you yet you can see everything when zoomed in

Rondar was the first person I saw doing this consistently but many others have jumped on the smokewagon..it seems that marking yourself in smoke would be the exact wrong thing to do as it gives away your position instantly

70 kills!!

I have pretty much ignored tanks. Last night I got the bright idea to try and defend a base with a Tiger. I got owned by somebody named scca. I felt like the new guy that ups an LA7 and is taken to school by somebody in a P-40.

I can't imagine landing 70 kills, I can imagine being part of the 70 though. I'm tempted to start playing with the tanks just for a change of pace.

I learned to use some smoke from others only once in a while, not every outing. Last night I tried smoke in my trusty Panzer and it was just like I did not use it. Enemy could see through it from 2k+. However, the enemy side was so smoky you couldnt hardly see past the stone fence and I couldnt see anything.

And good lord, how many smoke rounds do shermans have? 25? seems they never run out and my panzer has only 7.

One other thing, I found a hill and was behind it and it was 2-3 times the height of my panzer and i was getting shot behind it. I was PM'ing the guy XKO63 and he said I was in plain sight the whole time but I couldnt see through the hill.

I checked ans the smoke works exactly the same for the Pz as the sherman. No difference at all......

Seeing through smoke that's popped close to you has always been the case in AHII. We always pop the smoke halfway between ourselves & the target GV if we want to blind them & move ourselves, or right in front of our own position if we want to fire from cover. (we & us being my squaddies that GV) The "see through smoke screen" is nothing new. You just have to understand the limitation & learn to work around it. It's not really an unfair advantage since all can do it, not just one guy in a building or terrain glitch.
