p51 vs f6f-5 deflection trajectory
« on: April 17, 2007, 10:49:54 PM »
I was flying the p51d tonight, and was attempting angled deflection shots (if I am phrasing this properly), and noticed that the same ammo that is the f6f-5 drops MUCH more severely than on the f6f-5.  Conv set the same.

Any explaination for this?  On both occasions I'm at just about 200kph.

I don't really understand what are you talking about. Any difference in bullet drop can be verified using .target XXX command.

Check that your convergence is set the same on both airplanes.  IIRC, convergence also works in the vertical, so this will affect your perception of how quickly / how much drop there is.

Yes Conv was set the same.  Same airspeed give or take but a HUGE difference.

Not sure about what the .target command is or where you fidn out what dot commands are available and their explaination.  This wasn't on the help site when I started I dont think nor any of the others given to me as a newbie a couple months ago when I inquired.

.target XXX

sets a target XXX yards from your plane away to the north. It's a valuable tool to check convergences and bullet drop. To get rid of that target, just  type  .target 0

just a thought, but i think the gunsight on the f6 is higher than that of the p51. in relation to the guns. just a guess, but when the convergence is the same and you were shooting at the same distance you should see no differance.but with my theory the p51  would apear to drop faster because the sight is closer to the gun. If you look the bottom illistration picture the sightline raised higher above the wing the arc of the bullet stream would stay the same but withe the hight change the bulletstream would cross the sightline then cross it a second time as the bullets drop.

Sincraft,
I believe what you experienced was "loading".
Loading occurs when you put more g's on the aircraft.
As you were doing defection shooting I believe you loaded one airplane more than the other, without knowing it.
The plane might be in your site but if your loading into it for the shot the bullets will drop

There are alot of variables that can make it look that way, but the ammo isn't one of them. A .50 cal round is a .50 cal round. It's the same no matter what aircraft or vehicle it's fired from.

Anecdotally, I do well with the 6x.50 cals in the F4Us.  I cant seem to hit cheese when flying the P51D.  Go figure.
