Does Aces High Work With Windows 2000 Pro?
« on: April 21, 2001, 01:53:00 AM »
Hello,

I have been playing AH on Win98 a long while ago and it worked fine on my computer.  However as i switched to Win2k for stability, when i tried to play AH it didnt load and i dont think it detected my Voodoo 2.  Then it went to a screen the same colour as my desktop and didnt work.(i then fiddled around with deleting the video config etc, bt no joy.)

I have:
P2 400, 128megs ram,
Canopus Voodoo 2 12mb on 3dfx reference drives

all latest drivers on the poots.

All my other games like Half-Life and Quake word fine with my Voodoo2.

Please help me if you have had similar problems or know how to fix it, im also about to try the latest version AH full install.

By the way, when i mean it doesnt load, i mean it doesnt launch... after selected primary video display (because it didnt detect my voodoo 2 ) on the default settings 600*400 or something and on 16bit, it didnt launch, it just went to a screen the same colour as my desktop and didnt run. Its an i740 with drivers pv 4.0 on it and my normal voodoo 2 with 3dfx reference drivers

thanks!

Aces High works just fine with Windows2000 Pro.

Your problems are probably with display drivers that are not Windows2000 compatible. When your Voodoo was made, nobody knew about w2k. Try to find updated drivers if you can.

Hi Mr Sid,

I have the latest drivers for my voodoo 2.  Canopus stopped making G/F Cards and didnt have drivers for Win2k, so i had to get the latest reference drivers from 3dfx that support win2k and it runs my other games fine (half-life, quake in glide mode), however not Aces High.  So im not sure what to do now since there arn't any other drivers available... i even have DX 8.0a...

so? =[

Maybe because it only supports Glide mode it wont work on AH??

S!

I just upgraded to Win2K Pro.Lost 20fps+ in the process   AH works OK and lock-ups were solved by changing to Wave recording in expense of degraded sound quality in RW.Any performance tips from You techies/Win2K gurus?

ATi Radeon 64Mb DDR VIVO.Also using newest beta drivers from www.rage3d.com  for it.Looks like I have to return to the ages of 98/ME becasue of the performance drop in W2K Pro.

W2k requires a lot of RAM to work properly..

I'd reckommend 256Mb for anyone who will use it at game use. W2k contains unnecessary services which can be turned off from burdening the system.. Check www.tomshardware.com  and www.hardocp.com  for W2k tweaking tips. See also http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/win2k_services/index.shtml

It's possible that W2k gives a bigger performance hit on P2 than P3 systems.. I have a celeron2 with w2k pro (all updates) and I got 4-5 fps better results with 11.01 display drivers than with W98SE. Needless to say I couldn't believe my eyes.. But that's the way it is.

My other system is Elsa Geforce256 SDR, 256 ram, celly@901, sb live.. Vsync on as default (turning it off improves fps many times but screws up your gunnery.) My monitor refresh is 100hz when playing AH.

Aces high runs around 50fps 1024x768x32bits.
Smoke drops fps to around 25, but never does it drop below playable levels.

No, the problem is that ATI's Win2k drivers SUCK.  Heck AH runs on a Win2k server box I have with a Voodoo 3 in it just fine.

They are making some interesting graphics cards, but their driver support just doesn't cut it.

Seems so.Every single driver for Win2K seems to suck, regardless of product. Is the O/S so darn complicated or what is the reason?

It's just a totally new kernel for the companies to write drivers for.  In the past 3d acceleration in WinNT wasn't important.

ATI's drivers do suck.  This is the main reason I hesitate to tell someone to buy a Radeon card.

Well..the Radeon drivers have evolved quite a bit for Win9x/WinME.I had a very good performance in AH using WinME+Radeon.Win2K Pro drivers seem to need more development though. The performance drop was significant compared to FPS in WinME.In comparison...In WinME I had FPS ranging 25-240(depending on view etc.) and in Win2K I have 16-80FPS!!So they REALLY need to be tweaked.

I'm having the same problem with the bluescreen at start-up. Running win2k, Geforce 2mx with a p3 with sse, 256 mb, nv4 driver. Any suggestions on settings that could resolve the problem? I'm otw to check out the tweaking links above, but if anyone has any other ideas let me know.

Solved the performance issue.Went back to Win98SE and got latest 4.13.7103 drivers from www.rage3d.com  for Radeon. Also newest Radeon Tweaker 5.0(same url as above) is in use to get the last drop of performance out of my card
W2K is now for Office and other applications...
