Ah that's depressing

Add to that the teacher's union wants to reward bad teachers with big ole raises.  Id like to see them allow the merit pay, perks/bonuses for the teachers that DO make a difference.  I'm not a teacher but my parent is...and I can tell you that a good deal of em aren't very pleased with their respective teacher's unions.

It would be really cool if they re-focused on the kids.

One more justification for vouchers. Unlike government and government run schools, private schools must answer to the people or fail.

A school is similar to a computer at times. GIGO.

You must have students willing and able to learn with parents willing and able to be really concerned with their children's education as well as competent teachers. It's a 3 legged stool there and if one leg is missing or is way too short, the stool doesn't work very well.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

even george washington was afraid of the party system because he said it would tend to create division among the citizenry... he was absolutely right.  all political parties seek to advance their party first... even the officials they elect are "throw aways" if they become inconvenient for them.

The "recommending" is what is in question. If they simply had private ventures and put their deal on the table is one thing...

The management of Reading First has come under attacks from members of both parties. Federal investigators say program officials improperly forced states to use certain tests and textbooks created by those officials.

You've hit it pretty accurately.  Sadly, we have teachers who arent up to standards and a union that defends them viciously.  And that takes away from the credit the GOOD ones deserve.  Like any union, it seems to be like that...the slackers making the hard working ones look bad.

I think the Bush/Kennedy/NCLB act has some noble ideas...test kids, see how well they are really learning.  Its a reflection of the education they are receiving.  If kids are failing, as a parent, you deserve the right to take them someplace where their educational interests are being better served.

Yet the deafening teacher's union response is teachers need more money, start at much higher wages, etc etc.  Ok, fine.  But before we crank their pay, let's see what we're getting for our money.

We've thrown millions of dollars at the education issue and the problem persists.

One official, Roland H. Good III, said his company made $1.3 million off a reading test, known as DIBELS, that was endorsed by a Reading First evaluation panel he sat on. Good, who owns half the company, Dynamic Measurement Group, told the committee that he donated royalties from the product to the University of Oregon, where he is an associate professor.

Two former University of Oregon researchers on the panel, Edward J. Kame'enui and Deborah C. Simmons, said they received about $150,000 in royalties last year for a program that is now packaged with DIBELS. They testified that they received smaller royalties in previous years for the program, Scott Foresman Early Reading Intervention, and did not know it was being sold with DIBELS.

Members of the panel said they recused themselves from voting on their own products but did assess their competitors. Of 24 tests approved by the committee, seven were tied to members of the panel.

"I regret the perception of conflicts of interest," said Kame'enui, former chairman of the committee, who now works at the department as commissioner of the National Center for Special Education Research. "But there was no real conflict of interest being engaged in."

Wow scandilous indeed.
