Random lockup with sound looping..
« on: April 19, 2007, 11:55:13 PM »
I haven't had this issue since the week the ME-262 patch was introduced when a ton of people had the same symptoms.

I'll be playing fine. FPS maxed at 85 AA and AS cranked and the game looks awesome and plays flawless. Then suddenly , at any given time the game locks up and the sound playing at the moment loops indefinitely forcing me to reboot the computer.

My system specs are..

AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Toledo 2.6GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor

OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K - Retail

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard

Antec TruePower TrueControl 550 550W ATX12 Power Supply Retail

(2) Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JD 200GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer

Sound Blaster X-Fi™ XtremeMusic

GeForce 7800 GT   running 93.71 ForceWare Drivers.

ChProducts  USB Fighterstick
ChProducts USB Pro Pedals
ChProducts USB throttle
Trackir 4Pro

Where do I start trying to trouble shoot this when every other game runs flawless but my AH2 lockups?

Any help is appreciated because I'm lost, and want to play.

That FX-60 (2.6ghz)is running at 2.8 ghz according to your dxdiag report. Are you overclocking ? AH will crash overclocks faster than most any other games ive played. If your not overclocking , there is a problem in the bios somewhere or a program is turning up the cpu without u knowing , some cpu's dont like to be overclocked at all , that would cause the exact symthoms your having , GL

sound loop is too much excelleration in windows,  try turning it down a notch .

or it can be a irq problem if its sharing the wrong one .

most of my overclock blunders cause the OS to crash / or windows to boot crash.

Sounds like exactly the same symptom I had.

Try killing the process rather then rebooting. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the process manager (if you can't see it make sure you only have AH running). Hit Alt-E to end the application, hit E (or Alt-E) to say yes to killing the application. (Do it all even if you can't see any dialouges).
(To get it right you can practice with a non-crashed AH.)

Wait to see if AH dies and the desktop is restored.

This worked for me most of the time.

In my case switching from 60 FPS limit to Unlimited fixed the problem, but I still seem to get 60 FPS max (I know the CPU/Card can do much more).. It's all a bit strange, but try mucking with the FPS limit settings to see if you can get a stable program.

Airhog if you are running with v-sync on and your monitor is set to 60hz refresh rate the max you will ever see is 60 fps.

My first thought SunKing is overheating...   Is the fan controllable for the vid card?  See if you can turn it up perhaps.

I see a couple of potential issues.  I assume you have already applied the patch from AMD for the dual core problms?

The 9x.xx drivers from NVidia have some issues as well.

But, to test the theory, set Aces High II to run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode.  Right-click on the startup ICON, select "Properties", then select the "Compatibility" tab.

This forces the game to run on once CPU.  This will get around some of the problems with the 9x.xx NVidia drivers as well.

It could also be heat.  Checking the CPU and Video card tempertures in real-time might help show if that is an issue or not.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I don't have v-sync set, but I'll check it again. Not that 60 fps isn't enough..

I didn't set the CPU to be overclocked. I thought it was running at it's default speeds. I'll check bios again.

Ctrl-Alt-Del  doesn't work for me when AH2 locks.  I always run the FPS at unlimited and Vsynch on. Average 85 fp maxing out at 1600/1200 settings per my monitor.

I've never applied an AMD patch.

I checked my temps the 1st time I had this issue. I run Motherboard Monitor 5.3.7.0 and all the temps are fine and my fan rpms are consistant too.

Should I be using a certian version of Nvidia drivers?

Is this the patch I want to install?

"AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16 "

found here

Thanks for the help people.

The task manager may well be started even if you can't see it.
Did you try what I suggested?

Yes. I've tried alt-f4 and contrl/alt/delete methods to get out of the game. They never work after the lockup hits, only before. It can sit for an hour and never lets me kill the game. I do see the task manager minmized at the bottom but I can get to it with any method.

I already run the game on unlimited fps.
I've never run the game locked at 60 fps.
