Random lockup with sound looping..

The dual-core optimizer patch corrects some issues with the clocks Aces High II depends on.

But, if you do not have it installed, there is normally side effects, like the spinning clipboard flap.

Hmmm.  Did you install the motherboard chipset drivers/INF files?  I see a lot of standard Windows drivers being used, but the list is cutoff.

I do get that spinning clipboard all the time. I just reload the game till it goes away.

I'll repost the dxdiag when I get home.

I did install the mobo chipset and drivers right after the o/s installed. Got them off the DFI sight because the cd was outdated.

Can I go back and reload the chipset drivers now? or is it to late? ( I've always heard you have to install thoughs minutes after XP is installed).

No no.  If you are sure you loaded the chipset drivers, do not try to re-install them.  Many of the drivers installed after the motherboard drivers depend on various settings in the registry.  Re-installing the chipset drivers could cause changes in those settings and effect the rest of the drivers.

If you are getting the spinning clipboard, then install  the AMD patch and all your problems, including lockups, will probably cease.

Two minor things I saw were:
1) Sound acceleration " HW Accel Level: Full" It should be 3/4 maximum.
2) "Monitor: Default Monitor"  That should list your specific monitor.

We know the effects of the first one but the specifics of the second Skuzzy would have to chime in. I know it should display the actual monitor name though if you installed the specific driver for it.
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

That's odd , in my video card settings I do have the correct drivers for each of my monitors installed correctly and the names of each model are listed. I have them running at the correct res and refresh rates.

I'm having the exact same problem. I have to reboot each time.

The screen freezes or goes black and the sound loops intermittently. This usually occurs 30 to 40 minutes into the game.

My Specs:
Motherboard - ASUS P5W Deluxe
Processor –  Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe
Video – ATI  X1900TX 512mb
Power Supply – ANTEC/NEOHE 550W
Audio – Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Memory – Kingston 2 GB 800mhz DDR2
OS – XP Pro with SP2
Flight Controls – Saitek X52/CH Pro Pedals

I'm using the original drivers. I have installed the Dual Core patch. The problem appeared a few weeks after I installed the Sound Blaster Card. On board sound is disabled. Both video and audio cards have their own IRQ's. I did a DxDiagnostic and no problem appeared. I'm not sure how much of it you need to see, but this is the first half of it.

Random lockup with sound looping..
« Reply #24 on: November 27, 2007, 09:45:30 AM »
I remember reading problem with the nforce4 chipset and X-Fi cards that produced 'crackling sounds.'  But that does not seem to be the problem here.

Pulled this off the Creative website.

"We have observed through direct observation of the PCI bus on the nVidia nForce 4 motherboards that when the crackle symptoms are occuring, the Soundblaster X-Fi card PCI bus master memory requests for audio data are being held off (not serviced) for very long intervals.

We have observed peak holdoffs of up to 2 milliseconds in some cases. This is unusual chipset behavior that is beyond the ability of a hardware audio accelerator to compensate for in its internal buffering. The SoundBlaster X-Fi tolerance for these PCI holdoffs is approximately 120 microseconds peak holdoff, with a 1 microsecond average holdoff.

These design tolerances are based on observation of real PCI bus behavior on leading motherboards over a period of many motherboard hardware generations.

The nForce 4 motherboard is the first motherboard on which these extremely long PCI service holdoffs have been observed by Creative, where another PCI device in the system was not causing the holdoff."

Skuzzy thank for your quick reply.

I removed the "Modem #0" sound device. Rebooted and fired up the game. The game crashed after 30 minutes, but this time I got a "host lost connection error" from the game but no sound loop. In addition I received an ATI error message: "VPU recover has reset your graphics as it was no longer responding to driver command". Remembering your disdain for the ATI Catalyst Control Center, I removed it; reinstalled the stock video drivers; rebooted and started the game back up. The game crashed again as it did prior to removing "Modem #0 sound device, with a screen/computer freeze and looping sound.

I'd be grateful for any additional advice.
