True spying....
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:37:56 PM »
ok lets try another one....i just finished reading the post about cv spying etc...let me share what has been happening with my squad...

as most of you know i am C.O. of the Birds Of Prey (BoPs)...like many squads we run missions and allow folks not in the squad to hang out on a numeric ch (vs just using the "squad" auto ch)...we also use the same text ch to communicate back and forth...

over the last two months we have had almost nightly occurrences of "mystery" cpids hanging out on our ch...at first we thought it was guys left over from country missions etc...but then we had things we were saying or typing (yes i admit it we talk smack) being thrown back at us on ch 200 from actually vet players (i too wont mention names)...

so for example i might type or say "hey just owned xcpid over a9" on squad ch and next thing we know xcpid types back "hey that wasnt owning me"

or i might type "woohoo just kilt xcpid" and a squaddie reply "cool he is such a whiner" and next thing on ch 200 we would get confronted by the guy about talking smack about him....

what disturbed me more was that many times the xcpid were oldtime vets...not guys i would have thought would have played along with such foolishness...and it wasnt just one squad..but seemed to be several different squads who were receiving communication on what we were doing or saying....

we would confront the mystery 3000 rank cpid on our ch and they would disappear off the channel list and then reappear 10 minutes later...obviously we have no way of knowing who is tuned to the text ch...

so far it has been consistently rooks...no knits involved in this foolishness...

now i dont expect anything to be changed...i have not tried reporting anyone because no "rules" are being broken...but it does make me disappointed in those that choose to conduct themselves in such a way...

Don't talk about other people and you give them no incentive to tune (into a public channel). Or if you must, use squad red text.

Never say anything off squad channel that you wouldn't happily repeat on 200. If you choose to say something on an open channel, assume you won't be the only guy to read it.

If you want to keep something private, don't talk on a public channel. ;)

You were not on squad channel, you were on a generic channel. Why do you not just use the squad channel.

Squad channel poses a problem for those doing operations with multiple 32 member wings.

EDIT/ps. BOPS are not the only squad with multi-wing structure -- so dont interpret that as a slam. It's simply one of the limitations of squad text/vox.

all well and good....but obviously the main reason the duplicate accounts are on our ch are to inform the other country about our missions etc...i thnk it is just a side benefit that they can instigate arguments etc...

i guess it is possible someone enjoys spending $15 (or likely free trial period) to start verbal/text fights...but i doubt it...

one guy i dont mind naming was astone of the LCA who would routinely camp on our sq ch during our squad nights and coordinate rook responses to our missions...when we changed to flying aganst knits he would announce it on ch 200 what we had planned...

of course one should always be careful of what you do and hold yourself to the highest of standards....but how many of you can honestly say you could hold up under that scrutiny or would want to when you are trying to relax and goof around with the guys...i for one will admit that i cannot nor particularly want to try...

and again this is supposed to be a game...to me this is just as cool as hanging around behind a guy playing battleship/poker and signal to others what they are doing....again i am only suprised by those who seem to not mind receiving the info and using it...

i understand that many cant refrain from this being a BoP problem but i obviously could choose to do the same to:

wings of terror
56th
DFA
475th (one of the group receiving info on us)
hell angels
chawks
LCA
MAW
or any other large multiwing squads who cant use a single auto squad ch
(just check the squads listing and see how many squads have multi wings..)

also if they arent supposed to be available for multiwing squads or joint ops or private chat why do the other channels exist?

Falc --

I think most would agree that out-and-out spying is at least poor sportsmanship, even if it isnt "cheating". That goes for spying on shared squad channel (like you describe) but also for sharing mission information -- which is usually on a shared channel anyway.

I'm wondering if peer pressure might be a good way to discourage that behavior. Frankly, I can't think of a better way. Same approach is used when police departments post the names of businessmen arrested with hookers, for example...

So, while I appreciate your hesitance to name names, would it make sense to reveal who participates in this stuff?

EDIT: looks like your response came in while I was adding the clarification to my last post. Again, the comment was NOT meant as a BOP slam, just an observation about the limits of squad channel.

And BTW, you can add the 332nd Flying Mongrels to your list -- we had to go to 2 wings to avoid booting the guys who fly rarely but still want to be affiliated.

A system would first need to be designed that would allow multiple COs to latch themselves and their squads into one private squad channel before being able to move off the public channels.
