By a bizarre coincidence I just finished "Mornings on Horseback" which is the story of the early life of Theodore Roosevelt. In it, I was mightily impressed by one of his early speeches given at a July Fourth celebration in the Dakota Bad Lands roughly 21 years prior to this one, and have been trying to find a full transcript of it on the Net to no avail. Interestingly enough this much earlier speech contains almost exactly the same sentiments about all Immigrants being welcome provided they forever set aside their former nationality and consent to simply be Americans. It was Roosevelt's clear contention that this was the only way a unified America could could be forged from the peoples of many nations. So apparently this was one theme that he carried throughout his political career (the Roosevelts, incidentally were descendents of the original Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam - now known as New York City.)

As an immigrant myself I can well understand his sentiment, and am no fan of the increasing Balkanization of this nation.
