We'd just recaptured p14 and CV15 from the sneaky Bish. I finished flying up there in a P-47-D30 with the intent of going after a nearby Bish CV. But it had been sunk. I decided to fight of the hords of LVTs trying to make a mad dash for the map room. We held the base.
A bomber was over A5 and a bunch of us spawned to get it. I took a Yak-9U this time (all fighter sorties this tour will be in a Yak)... but the bomber discoed as I climbed over 14k. We all decided to head towards A4, most chasing an Arado that had considered bombing A5 but thought better of it when the cloud appeared before it. We made it all the way to A4 and there were no cons.. so I dove in on some ack. I got 3 before the ack that never seems to hit anyone at our bases got my fuselage with 1 ping.
There were a ton of knits there and they were pounding A4. I decided to up in a P-47-D30 (heavy) and help clean up any GVs that made it out of the VH before it was destroyed. When I got to A4, there were no GVs to be found, but fighters were starting to spawn. I dropped my ord on a FH and took it out, then the remainder on another FH... I also took out the ammo dumps so I didn't have to see another "why I hate car bombing" thread. I turned my attention to the spawning fighters.
I got 4 or 5 planes... most of them as they lifted off the ground. I wasn't doing too bad on ammo, but I'd spent some on an FH and the ammo dumps. A N1K2 had come in from a nearby base and was engaging with a serious energy advantage. He'd killed on of my fellow vulchers just before I got him as he did a looping turn at about 500 yards. It blew him appart, but 6 of my guns went dry as I saw the explosion. I had 27 rounds left.
A 109 had since made it up as most of the vulchers at the base had either ran out of ammo or ran into the ground. It was just me and one other friendly at A4 now. I had already called bingo ammo and was trying to head for home, but the 109 thought differently. It took a series of turns, split-s, immelman and a few moves that are too stupid to have names for before my countrymate killed the jug obsessed 109.
About that time, we broke in opposite directions as a few high cons jumped down on us. I don't know what happened to him, but I ended up with a La-7 with a serious E advantaged focused solely on my ammoless jug. I don't know how I did it... but it took some 5 minutes of constant breaking to avoid the 1-pass then climb away La-7. I'd managed to get myself turned toward A5, but had somehow gotten seriously east of A4 and had to fly below several incoming enemy fighters... all the while avoiding the La-7 that wouldn't leave me alone.
The La-7 finally got one of my ailerons, but overshot doing so. His entire plane filled my gunsight and I cursed my ammoless state as I touched the trigger in an attempt to scare him away with as little of the 27 rounds I had left as possible. I pinged his wing a couple times and he broke. It allowed me to gain about 1.4 of separation with him now close to co-e with me. Of course, that wouldn't last given the low alt top end of the La-7... but if I could just make it to help I'd be OK.
As I neared the beach about halfway to A5... I saw several high cons. The La-7 had closed to 1k and was starting to really gain on me. As we neared the high cons... all I saw was red. Not a single friendly con in the bunch. I was so screwed. I checked back on the La-7 that was now closer.. just in time to see a diving La-5 coming in fast. I managed to jink as he shot by at nearly 500 mph. I didn't lose much E.. but the La-7 was now dangerously close. He couldn't follow me through my initial break which coincidently had gotten me out of the path of the La-5 and a 109 that decided to join the fight too.
As I pointed for A5 again... I noticed the La-7 had left me. I have no idea what happened to him. The La-5 was going way to fast to be of any concern.. but the 109 was being a real pain. He pinged me a couple of times and managed to get one of my guns... one of the ones that was completely dry. At this time.. I was down to 8 rounds. I managed to do some light rudder assisted rolls that I thought would get me killed for sure since I only had one aileron. I slowly climbed as I did this. The 109 helped by overshooting in the turns and having to bleed alot of e to try to get back behind me.
Then it happened... the 109 overshoot. He immediately banked hard to the right and brought himself right in front of me. More out of instinct than anything else.. I squezed the trigger. Every bullet hit his plane.. but dammit.. they were fuselage shots. No damage to show for it.
I managed to separate a little, but the 109 was coming in from the side and he seemed a little pissed. That's when I spotted a squadie chasing a Typhoon that was diving in on my from my high 3 o'clock. I turned inside of the closing attacker just in time to force the 109 to overshoot again. The turn had put my nose pointing straight at the now impossibly close A5. I dove and tried to gain some speed. As I leveled... I checked for the 109 that now had my squadie pursuing him. He'd gone into a split-s after overshooting me.. he didn't pull up <pilot wounded?>. I was tickled to see I got credit for the 109 kill.. and it was Skernsk.
Ah... after a long hard fought battle, its always nice to wipe your bellybutton with an FDB
