Wireless performance
« on: May 05, 2007, 09:10:06 AM »
I have no net at the moment and it looks like wireless may be the only option for the next year or so.  I've not had the net at home to play AH for about 2 years and i really wanna play.

Does anyone know what sort of performance i can expect?  eg lag, dropped packets?  or is it simply to do with the ISP i choose.

Thrila! Good to see ya bro!  I don't know about the UK, but I had a friend that played AH for awhile on wireless and it played smooth as silk for him.

Long distance wireless like that theoretically has more potential than wired internet.. but of course there are some obstacles that may need to be overcome.

Distance from the transmission tower, line-of-sight, and interference are the three biggest factors.  Obviously (for the most part) the closer you are to the tower, the better... and a clear line of sight with no trees, houses, office buildings, etc in between is ideal.  You may also have issues if you have a lot of power lines nearby.. or live near an airport.

But if these three things aren't a problem, you shouldn't have any problems.

I have wireless broadband and it's working pretty good . Had it for over 3 years now .

"2.  Unlike other wireless Internet Services, our broadband signal is non line-of-sight and travels through trees, walls, and everything in between allowing us to reach more customers, without the use of bulky towers on your roof. "

Mine is not just "line of sight" .

If you find a co to get it from , they should come to your home and check what kind of signal that you should get etc . I am about 3 miles from the "grain leg" on the local grain eleavator .

I get same speeds uploading and downloading , about 64k or so sometimes 92k .

Not any worse for droped packets if it's working good . Some Sunday mornings it's funny acting but thats cause of no tech guys there till 8 am and they always seem to have that fixed about 8:30 am . That don't happen always though .

I did have to get a static IP address , cause they flushed the routers every hour and then I would disco . After that I was golden , as they say .

cu soon ??
