The only way to avoid damage from AA is to keep changing direction every few seconds. It still follows you around like an over eager dog, but you take no damage. If you fly straight or in a steady, constant rate turn, no matter how fast you go, you will take damage.
The exception seems to be buffs, I've never seen one of those downed by auto puffy AA.
In RL there would have been a shipboard electro-mechanical computer working trajectories out and sending aim and fuse setting info to the guns. So realistically what the AA routine should do is calculate where you will be in 30 seconds (or whatever it took in RL), and then put a box of AA there. It would be cool to turn 90 degrees left and see the AA box appear off to your right.
Still, at least they've got rid of the damn stuff from airfields now.
