It was during this operation that the USAAC found out that the C-46 Commando had a fatal fuel problem, that caused the aircraft to easily burst into flames.  I think all of the C-46s that burst into flames were able to release their paratroopers, but most of the flight crews perished.

My mother sent me copies of my grandfather's discharge papers.

I have details. :)

He was part of the 513th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

I have no clue as to battalion or platoon assignments.

Don't know where to begin looking either.

Here's a good start for research.. .US ARMY HERITAGE MUSEUM

Friend of mine is the oldest surviving WW2 historian, has published numerous accounts from all eras, but primarily WW2.  He lives fairly close to myself and Halo.  Let me pick his brain and see if he has some short cuts to help you research.

Sandy, the pics aren't coming through... all I see is a white box place holder with a big red X in the middle. Did you remove the link?

Hi Sandy,

Thanks much for posting those pictures and giving the history behind them. I was always meaning to ask you where the cool pics were from when your avatar changed, just never got round to doing it.

As for the soldiers, ministering at Ft. Bragg and having met so many men from both generations, there is much I could write if I weren't so tired. There are commonalities between both generations, characters you could recognize from any American army in any age, the griper, the optimist, and the stoic, the hero, the coward, and the common men who do their dangerous and uncomfortable duty day after day without deserting. In that sense Human nature remains the same, we are at heart the same people who fought the Second World War. If there are big differences between the generations I'd say you see them more in the national character (which is very different) than in the ranks.

But that's enough for now, again Sandy thank you, moving stuff.

Thanks for posting this Sandy.   to your father.

I have 2 grandfathers who served back then, but I have no idea where to look up information on their service, what they did, etc.

Is http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/index.htm a good place to start to research that?
