TE hogs CPU bug is back
« on: May 11, 2007, 03:30:10 AM »
It seems that TE again hogs all CPU resources if it is minimized or gets covered with another window. I think this occured also in some earlier version, but got fixed. Now it is back :(

Peeks indicate the TE minimized. It is almost impossible to work with any other program together.

I don't know if you solved your issue or not but you might take a look at this thread on Creative's (Soundblaster/Audigy) site.  My P4 machine crashed with the TE running and after allowing the error report to go through to Microsoft an MS page launched and it linked to the Creative download page. Sorry, I didn't save the error report (KS?) number. The forum thread refers to a conflict between an MS update and the drivers for Creative's cards causing 100% cpu usage.

I can't recommend you install this, it's up to you to see if it's related to your problems but it looks suspiciously similar.

Maybe Skuzzy can chime in.

This package upgrades the Sound Blaster Live! driver and enhances the overall product performance on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. The package also upgrades core applications including Audio HQ and Surround Mixer for optimal Sound Blaster Live! performance.

Edit: One last thing, I haven't installed the new driver myself as I haven't had the problem until now after running multiple applications all day. I will be doing research on the driver, looking for side effects, this weekend and then I'll decide if I still want to install it.

Easyscor, you should be able to look at the task manager (Processes tab) and see if it is in fact SVChost using up the CPU.  If it's not, then I doubt this particular problem report is relevent, and messing with your drivers may be ill-advised.

I hope they fix this in the TE, and in the game as well! ;)

Slightly off topics but!

If you are experiencing svchost.exe hogging 99% of your CPU. Especially at bootup time it is most likely a result of Automatic Updates. This is an ongoing issue with MS that as of yet does not have a permanent fix.

One temporary fix is this:

go to Control Panel, Services, Stop the Automatic Update Service.

go to c:\windows.

Delete the folder SoftwareDistribution

go back to Control Panel, Services and start the Automatic Update service.

This helps stop this from happening but there is not guarantee it will not return some time in the future. If it does then repeat the above procedure.

Also, make sure your anti-virus software is not scanning this folder. Automatic Updates reads the files in this folder every time it checks for updates, having your anti-virus actively scan this folder will only eat up more processor time during an already processor intensive operation.

your first problem is that you have 71 processes running
with te open on my machine i have 25 processes running at 30%
try shutting down some of those background utilities

you can use this link to kill uneeded progs

Twinboom, that is surely useful, but that is not the point.

When the TE is maximized, I still have 71 processes running, but CPU is at about 0%. Then simply minimizing the TE pushes CPU to 100%.
