Anyone here from Greece?
« on: May 13, 2007, 12:53:15 PM »
I remember a few players of Aces High living in Greece but alas I have forgotten.

Anyway my Nephew is coming to Greece shortly.  He has been invited to come and help design a new resort at the Southern most Island of Greece (I've forgotten the name).  He is an Urban Planning Engineering Student from the Univ. of Cinn.  They do the studying on the job.  He has worked in Baltimore on the Waterfront and elsewhere.  After his job is done designing in Greece he plans to take a 3 week tour of Europe.  I don't have his itinerary as of yet but his Uncle Hajo wishes he could go with him.

Anyone from Greece can you tell me what to expect?  I'm interested.

Thanks!

Hajo

Not from Greece but I have been there quite a few times. One of the best places in the world in my opinion. I spent almost all of my time on the mainland though - the islands can be a bit touristy.

What to expect?..... Beer served in McDonalds - although eating in McD's is for chumps when the local cuisine is available. Coming from England I found the cost of living over there to be low. A huge dinner would cost the equivalent of $4 however, I was there pre-Euro so that kinda price is probably out-dated. Alcohol is cheap too.

The girls.... Well.... Be careful here. The girls are really friendly. The guys are very protective of them though.

What else? Weather... Hot but not humid. It starts hitting 80 around April and doesn't let up until late October.

Lots of history around the place, obviously. Also, many, many English speakers.

I'm jealous. The one thing I miss, now being in the U.S is traveling around Europe.

My Oldest Nephew is going to Italy May 22nd to June 28th he;s visiting with his Masters Class Rome, Florence, and Naples.

My other nephew his younger Brother is going to Greece on June 11th. His first stop is Athens....then the Island of Santorini to work on a design for a resort there.  Then he is traveling to Rome, Barcelona, Paris, and at this time Munich is kind of iffy.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Forgot to mention something rather important....

When you go to the bathroom, you don't flush the paper, it goes in a bin by the side. Old Greek plumbing can't handle it.

Hey Hajo, I am from Greece.  Sounds like he is going to Crete.  You should expect him to wake up hungover and hate him after he tells you his women stories.  lol, are you asking about safety? worse think that could happen to him is that he gets too drunk and gets too brave lol.

Tinman, that is true only if you rent an appartment in a 200 year old house.  That is the case in the islands since they try to keep the old towns.

lol I live in Cincy Hajo, I wonder if I've ever run into him at the bar scene.

:t

Sounds like Crete he's going to.  I was there in '01 on a trip w/ 2 Classics professors and was on the island for 4 days.  Beautiful place.  Heraklion totally blew me away.

I also got to play golf on the only course on the island (one of only 3 in the entire country, lol).  Rented a wedge and a putter from the front desk and off I went lol.  We were supposed to go see an old Venetian fortress that day, but the weather was perfect, and my professor being a golf nut decided we should "take the afternoon off."  His wife rolled her eyes, walked away and 3 of us and my prof teed it up.  Great day it was.

:D

It's been like that wherever I went. Like I said, I stick to the mainland and the most recent trip was to Gerakina where I stayed in a modern hotel and still had the dual language "don't flush the paper" sign.

I’m a not quite sure what exact info you want about Greece, but since am from Greece and live in Athens, I’ll  try to give you a brief note.
Beware off
I)   Taxi drivers in the Airport. If they see that you a first timer here (But just to be fair with them some of them and not all of them) they will (probably) double-charge you. So try to be cool and make sure that it is not your first time here, witch means that you already know about the taxi prices. But there is also a train that he can gets you to center with low price.
II)   Pedestrian crossings. We do not always stop
III)   Driving in Athens. Madness
Other than that there is no other reason to be anxious off, but prices are relative high at least for us who lives here. For instance a Frape in a good cafeteria has a range price from 3 to 5 Euros. Santorini is wonderful place and your nephew is going to love it. The temperature here now its about 30 to 35 Celsius, so it hot but the humidity is low. If he stays in Athens for a day or two he has to visit Plaka and eat Souvlaki, (this is a classic tourist attraction) and as for night he can go to the summer night clubs near the sea side, (near to Glifada, Elliniko suburbs etc) but he has to know that the face control is relatively strict.

If you need any additional info I will be very happy to give you.
