Frame rate
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:55:46 PM »
I just got a 22" wide screen and my frame rate is in the dirt. I was running
around 71 fps with my CRT, now I'm around 21 fps at 1680 X 1050.
The monitor is an Acer 22". Is there any thing I can do to increase my fps?
Thanks

What video card, and what are your system specs?

From my discussion with Skuzzy regarding the same upgrade (haven't got the monitor yet, did some asking around first) and same basic card:

Your 6200 would simply put a gun to its silicon brain and pull the
trigger at that resolution.

Basically, you need to upgrade your vid card.

Checked out Best Buy and they have a wide range, which card would be the best for my computer? I don't want to spent too much and put a hemi into a Yugo.

I ordered this one. The same card at any of the big box stores nearby is $200.

My rig is an old socket A AMD XP2400+ (roughly 2GHz) on an Asus A7N8X-X mobo, 1GB PC2700 RAM, SB Live soundcard, and Skuzzy said this should be plenty of card (basically my CPU would be the bottleneck, and any bigger or more badassed card would probably not be worth the expense).

Granted, different PCs altogether, but I would think the same model of card would serve you well.

I wish I could comment on the improvement over the 6200 I have currently, but  "Overnight shipping delivered by 3PM" apparently means "Whenever Fed Ex feels like delivering it".  Anyway, some other folks are using it; other than Hoarach having some Mobo/vid card compatibility issues, I don't recall seeing any complaints about it.

I just built Core 2 Duo rig and stuck a 7600GS 512mb PCI-E card in it yesterday coincidentally. I already had a 22" widescreen and was getting pretty much steady 60 fps in native res for the monitor. My refresh rate is 60 so that's the max fps I could get anyway.

I myself have a PNY 7600 GS 512MB AGP which I got for $150 at Compusa.  My processor is a AMD 64 3200+, 512MB of system RAM, a SB Audigy 2, and a 500W Ultra X-finity psu along with a 17" Acer LCD monitor.

I have high res textures and the sliders all the way up and pulling out 70-90+ FR with it rarely dropping below 70.  Yea Im using 1024x768 because I think the 1650 looks too small but I would recommend the PNY 7600GS 512MB.  For what you get I think its a hell of a card.

You can get 71 fps again if you set the monitor res to that of your old CRT.  Larger resolutions are require more graphics and cpu performance.  And your computer is fairly low end and older while you monitor is pretty big.

Thanks for the inputs, due to the limitations of my power supply (250W)
my choices were limited. Ended up getting the VISIONTEK RADEON X1300,
only problem is that it'll be a week before Best Buy can get it. Will let you know how it turns out.

Yeah your power supply definantly would not support a higher end card.  If you have to wait a week, why not order the video card online?  You'll save some bones probably from BestBuy's price.

As I look at the X1300, I see that the specifications are saying you need a 350W power supply.  Did the guys at BestBuy say their X1300 will work with 250W, like did they should you specifications for it?  Or was the guy like "Yeah sure it should work."  Because these people are generally not smart :)
