2 CPU's ????
« on: May 18, 2007, 07:49:38 PM »
OK, I have a neat little problem. I had a problem with a DVD drive not being recognized by windows, bios saw it ok, but not windows. I tried to fix it with the XP "repair" mode, and the mode switched over and started re-installing XP. Once it loaded windows on the install it still couldn't see the CD/DVD drive so it stopped the install due to not being able to find files. Canceling out caused it to reboot, and the reboot started at the same spot in the install.... windows loop !!! It wouldn't let me do anything else.

My solution was to swap my 2 HDs, boot to the new "Master", and do a fresh install of windows. Install seemed normal, and had the normal problems  :)  Installed 4.12 omegas for my video card, upgraded DirectX to 9.0c, fresh DL of the game, and started setting up the controls and noticed screen looked a bit blah, and FR was very low. before in the 70's, now 15 !

So I start looking for trouble. Bring up the task manager , and under the "performance" tab the CPU Usage History window is split which I assume is showing me two CPUs. The first is about maxed out, the second one is about 50%. Now the funny thing..... I have only ONE CPU !!!!!

BIOs shows only one CPU, and on the "processes" tab CPU usage splits between "System" and "System Idle Process". They jump from 40-60% back and forth. Dxdiag (see below) reports 2 CPUs, again "I wish !" HELP !!!!

ok, as an update..............

Bios showed hyper threading enabled. Turned this off got me back to a singe CPU. CPU cycles were being eaten up by the CH products through the USB hub. Disconnecting them setteled everything down. I'm thinking that the USB stuff was still hitting the old HD instead of reinstalling it all on the new HD.

Going to reinstall everything one at a time and retest to make sure I'm not crushing my cycle again after each piece is put back in. Looking forward to a fun filled day !
