Went from onboard-audio to a Soundblaster Audigy in hopes of ending the micro-freezes caused by puffy-acks--got a new headset same day, and havent been able to get the talk side of my vox to have any decent volume on other end since--thought it might be the noise-canceling mic, so I bought a cheapie boom mic, which seems to have helped the choppy part of it, but with EVERY possible setting maxed, my vox level remains quite low for those trying to hear me (yes, even did the 20 db boost-thingie) --have it maxed in AH, windows, as well as Creative settings..out of ideas

Have you tried your mic in another other programs?  Like Windows Recorder etc?  How is the volume then?

This sounds like the problem I had when I got my new pc .

Try this test .

Use Windows Recorder . <-- this is a good tool to check sound level .

Put the mic right up to your lips and record , then move it back to were it would normaly be .

On my rig , it would be fine if I was "kissing" the mic but at a normal 2" away from your lips would just like you said , very faint .

The only fix I did was install my old Turtle Beach sound card and it worked like a charm . ATM I am not to happy with Creative . I did get the one that didn't work well back from the PC builder but I just left it in the box , why bother as it's working fine now for me . Plus they never wrote squat about what was wrong etc , even after "they" said they would . Not to happy with them either .

Hope u get it figured out
