Request new damage point on 109s and spits
« on: May 17, 2007, 01:55:54 PM »
Currently, if you have damage to the "Engine radiator" item, you stream grey smoke from somewhere near the prop (in some planes, ABOVE the prop).

The radiator system was a lot more complex, and I'm not asking for a revolutionary change, I just want an addition.

I was thinking of 109s, but everything here also applies to spitfires. I've never seen a 109 lose a radiator in this game from taking hits to the wing.

However, it's got two honkin' huge-arse radiators beneath each wing! And plumbing in and out of both!

I would like to request 2 new objects be associated with the radiator system: One for each under-wing radiator! Keep the nose-area radiator damage as-is. Add it so that if either of these wing-mounted radiators gets hit, the smoke starts from that spot instead of the prop.

Now, if you take a hit to the plumbing going in and out of the engine, you're going to overheat at the same fast speed every time. If you get hit JUST to one of the wing-mounted radiators, you wouldn't overheat as fast, since the OTHER radiator is still working. You'd overheat half as fast.

This doesn't change the existing system in any way, just adds 2 more components, that do the same thing as what we have now, just each of the 2 new ones does it at half the rate.

So that would apply to all spits except spit1 and spit5, which would only get the 1 radiator instead of 2.

Would the two radiator Spits also get the automatic shutoff valve to stop coolant loss when one of the radiators is holed?

(FYI, I think the Spit's radiator(s) are the hit box for the Radiator damage)

I've hit 109s and spits in the wings a lot. I've been hit in the wings a lot while in them. Only time they or I lose radiator damage is if we take hits in the nose, it seems.

I don't know about automatic cut-offs, but it makes sense that localizing the damage in one radiator would slow down the leaking (half the flow, other half diverted to the other radiator).

It actually stopped the leaking outright if the hole was beyond the Y valve where the two radiator's feeds joined.  That was in the fuselage.

For gameplay's sake I think it'd have to work so that you still overheat, but at 1/2 the rate. I don't know if cruising in this game conserves heat or not, I almost never see the temp needle move unless I'm on WEP.

So lemme get this straight.... what you want is an additional area in which we can get radiator damage if hit?? :huh

Yes!

Come on, it's not as if this is asking for the plane to be weaker or anything. Just duplicate what we have in another spot.

If you're taking enough rounds there, you're going to lose something, whether it's the wing of the gun on the wing, who knows? This is just a "doesn't really change the gameplay, but would be a cool detail" request.

Why In Bloody hell would you wanna do that??? FOr sake of detail??

I wouldnt Mind Transfering Radiator Damage area's To the underside of the wings, But to have em both on the wings and on the nose area?? :huh

About half of Krustys post are nonsense anways.:aok\

Before long we'll see him requesting a damage model for a hang nail or cramps.

ohh!!
it should be that is you have cramps you can pulll less G's, and if you have a hang nail you can't scratch you head when you get shot down :o ;)

Frankly, I think you'd be fine if you stayed down on cruise settings - pressurized water cooling is pretty efficient, and its COLD way up there.  You could start the wep overheat at anything over cruise settings, and let it run all the way up to seizing the motor.  Your "half the rate" idea (double the rate of temperature rise on wep with one radiator gone) seems like the simplest solution though.

Edit: after seeing last nights edition of Dogfights, it came to me that another interesting addition would be to have the engine catch fire on overheats instead of just dying.  They had a P40 pilot on Dogfights who shot down 3 Sallys in a night action, got his engine shot up with 7.7mm fire and had to ditch in the river after his engine overheated and caught fire.  Oil + Gas + Heat = Fire when there is no coolant.

I'm quite serious. It's like having guns in a wing, but never being able to damage (disable) those guns when you take hits to the wing.

WHY?

Because it's one step closer to realistic (and a small step at that, I'm surprised at the outcry against this idea).
