Compatibility with Vista?
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:56:15 AM »
I am building a PC very soon and am planning on putting Windows Vista Premium Home on it.

I checked out he minimum requirements and for the Operating systems it lists most Windows OS's starting with Windows 95 up to Windows XP, but Windows Vista is not listed.

Will Aces High 2 run on Windows Vista?

However, I hear lots of complaints from folks using Vista for gaming, so you might want to be prepared for grief.  On the machine I just got, I went with Windows XP for that reason.  (Well, that and my not liking the OS using lots of CPU cycles to decide whether or not I have the appropriate digital rights for each polygon displayed on my screen.  I'm being only somewhat facetious here.)

Wrong.

Vista BAD
XP Not quite as BAD.

Were it not for gaming, I'd have gone completely over to Linux and Mac on all my computers by now.

But, if going with Vista, I'd personally use a RAID 0 configuration with two drives in the 70 to 100 GB range, and use a large third drive or network drive for the bulk of my storage needs.  Also, whatever memory you think you'd use on a XP machine, double it for the Vista beast.  Resource HOG.  Spend some cash on processor and motherboard too.
And make sure everything you buy is compatible with Vista.  Not a great deal of legacy support with Vista.

If you are building a economy box, forget Vista and find a copy of XP.

Vista has taken a step toward Linux, Unix, and Mac with it's Windows Integrity Control (WIC) --- similar to MAC, but there seems to be some question as to whether the Installer integrity level may prove to be a serious exploit.  It will be interesting if it proves to be.

What does "trolling" mean?  I've been away from the forums for quite a long time.

I hear people say that Vista is bad and such, but the only problems I've heard are bad drivers, which can be fixed in time.  I understand that Vista will probably use up more resources than XP, but then again, I'm purchasing a really nice rig, so there shouldn't be much of a difference at all (leaving out the drivers part).

Troll: a troll is someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding.
Trolling is the act....

I don't think this rates as a troll, though the response might be.

Vista has a lot of overhead, does not support legacy products (the driver issue you mentioned), and there is some question over some potential exploits to the OS the way the WIC is set up.

As long as you are going overboard on those resources: processor, memory, graphics cards, hard drives, storage space, motherboard..... and so long as all of it is Windows Vista compatible, you should be okay for gaming in general.

There will probably be some gaming issues with old games.  And as to AHII compatibility, I refer you to this thread:
Tecnical Support Forum AHII Vista Sticky

Personally, for a rig meant for gaming, I'd stick with XP Pro, use 3rd party software for security and malware (Computer Associates or Avast) and have a good router with a good firewall configured between it and my internet connection.  I'd wait to make the jump to Vista much later on.

If you are not comfortable with the hardware and software aspects of a good home network, and want a "turn key" set up with the latest security, then I suppose Vista will work for you so long as you are not trying to build an economy box to run Vista.  I can't suggest the best way to go about it, as I'm avoiding Vista.

I tested AH and other games in Vista a few months ago for an article I wrote in CPU Magazine. I used identical machines with the different OSes. I posted my results in the Hardware/Software forum, but the summary is...

Games can expect a 10% to 20% framerate hit under Vista compared to XP if there is more than enough RAM to run the game and the OS.

That said, whereas you'll be pretty happy with 1GB of ram under XP, Vista will still hit the hard drive a lot for swapping things. This slows down games even more. Adding more RAM (like, say, to 2GB) makes Vista snappier overall. But still expect a 10% to 20% hit.

If I were you, I would make a dual-booting system that had XP and, if you really must have it, Vista. There are plenty of websites that go over how to do this, or you could pick up the July issue of CPU Magazine, where I write about how to add Vista to XP or XP to Vista.

Llama,

I just made my purchase 20 minutes ago on Newegg (I have not purchased an OS yet)

Antec p180 Silver Case (Rolled aluminum, 3 vents and 3 fans)
GIGABYTE Mobo NVidia 650i
700W COOLMASTER Power Supply
Intel e6600 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU (Conroe)
eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640MB
G.Skill 2GB of DDR2 800 RAM
Seagate 320GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
Thermalright inc. Heatsink + 120mm Fan (TO REPLACE STOCK CPU HEATSINK/FAN)

Again I haven't decided an operating system, but this rig will be used for GAMING.

I have read tons about Vista eating up memory like a squirrel gathering nuts in November.

Should these specs be sufficient enough to run Vista Premium Home (32 bit) well, even in games?  I'll be running games such as MS Flight Sim X, Armed Assault, and Operation Flashpoint 2 when it comes out... as well as Aces High 2.

(I apologize if this thread should be in hardware and software)

Mak,

All B.S. and Forum fun aside, I'm on Vista, I'm running it on a lesser system than you are buying (but not by much).

It runs AH fine, I'm at 1600x1050 on my wide viewsonic wx2200 monitor and my frames are rarely under 45fps and are often over 70fps (textures are hires 1024, and all sliders are maxed out).

Vista IS NOT great for gaming.  Take that seriously.  There still are huge problems with sound card drivers MAJOR HEADACHE.

Vista delivers a few nice gizmos, but really, XP is better.  Buy XP.

If you simply must have vista for some reason, it will run all your games, and the previous post about a 10-20% loss of frame rate is correct (currently, I'm sure future drivers will boost it)...

The main BIG sucker punch is the audio, which makes a scratchy AM radio sound really nice.  SERIOUSLY... Of course, those are also just driver problems and will likely go away.

In short... XP good... Vista, not as good.

Vista is not the end of the world as so many people would have you believe.... But, it does chew up more resources... Resources that should be running your game, not your O.S.
