looking for help with p40e

I am flying the upcoming Operation Husky in the P40 E model. I am not the best pilot in this game nor even that good:cry . I am looking for any tips or pointers on how to stay alive in this plane. I have been using it in the late war arena just to fight with and getting torn up. I would appreciate any help I can get.

As with other planes that lack performance you'll need to make up for it by using numbers, coordination and discipline to achieve any success.

Try to keep your group together at the P40's best altitude and hope that the Axis come at you in smaller groups or if you can arrange it, singles.

Are you talking about the right plane?

Because the only bad thing about a P-40 is the climb rate.

nice war bird, needs more power. use flaps when turning. dun try to turn with zekes, spit etc etc... try BnZing.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

Flaps open up and very high speed for this plane. the only time they can't be opened is at or above 400 mph. Us this to your advantage. if an exemy plane bounces you and you can outdive him (A6M's cannot dive with you), and if he's dumb enough to follow, dive until at high speed. use a notch of flaps and keep the speed high. ALWAYS gain altitude before a fight. Maybe about 10 - 12,000' to work with.

It's sad to see novices fly uber low and end up getting caught.

This plane is not a piece of junk. The scenario takes place in EW/MW times where the P40 is not that bad of a plane and actually out preforms most of the Axis planes in the scenario if used correctly.

Keep your E up.

Stay with your group.

If any trouble comes up just dive out you out dive most planes in the scenario.

If forced to turn fight use flaps and wingman tactics to succed

However, don't leave your flaps down; it's neither a Spitfire nor a P-38.  Fly it like a P-47.  Drop flaps whenever you need them, but raise them as soon as possible.  You do not have the power to be flying around with that much drag for a long time.  A good rule of thumb is, if he's gaining on you in a turn, drop flaps.  The moment you start gaining on him, raise them.

It's fun to land kills in a plane that others think is a piece of junk. :D Good on you for flying her.

You have to pick your fights carefully. A furball on the deck is not the best place to be, so keep some air under you. There is a noticeable difference in handling once the fuselage tank is dry, so I suggest you carry a drop tank and 50% fuel, then switch to the fuselage tank (Shift + F until tank is in yellow) during climb out and drain it first. After it is dry, cycle back to automatic fuel management with the drop tank in white and drop it when engaging.

If you do get low and in trouble, the P-40 scissors very nicely.

Dude, don't just stay alive, clobber those 109s.

P-40E turns very well, especially with flaps.  As with any plane, you don't want to leave your flaps down too long; the people who suggest that you fly the 40E like a 47 impart wisdom, although the P-40 really turns very well.  Give up on the notion that you can outclimb any of your opponents in that plane set.  Watch your energy - the P-40E does a fairly good job of picking it back up, so take advantage of any few seconds to level the wings and get the nose down a bit.  Practice your vertical turns, but vertical DOWN, not up.  You have lots of ammo and good long range guns, take advantage of them.

If you can find 1Duke1 in AvA (or here, for that matter), ask him for tips, he has become legendary in the P-40E.

Not much experience in this bird, but it is fun to use the great diving abilities to swoop into a furball at 400+ when everyone figures your a slowpoke by your icon.

Why not just take 25% and DT? That's all that you've accomplished here. It's not which tank you drain that is helping you, it's the fact that you're almost out of gas and many hundreds of pounds lighter than the normal combat load this plane would carry. That's what makes it feel like a better plane.

Then again, you get the same results in ANY plane in this game if you only take 25%. You pay for it by only getting 1 fight per sortie.

P.S. in scenarios you almost always have to take 100% fuel, because you have a mission to accomplish and need to do it without running out of gas, so that's not an option outside the MA.
