Unfortunately not true.  In WWI maybe, but in WWII pilots on both sides often shot men in chutes... Especially in the PTO.... a LOT of anger towards the japs back then.

back at cha stang I must have gotten disco'd.  I'm humbled by the recognition of my impact on this community of miscreants and sociopaths.  there's an old surfing term for people such as most of you posters.  it was created for people who are all but useless and usually squeakers is what we would call them here but it goes beyond mere squeakerness.  the term easily could be attached to players such as every BoP, skycrock, and Phawk.   that term is gremmie.  you guys are a bunch of gremmies.  thanks for the chuckles some of the posts are funny stuff.

In the PTO and on the eastern fron the conditions were grim. In the pacific, getting shot would be a better alternative than bobbing in the ocean for a couple weeks to die with sunburns and eaten by fish. On the eastern front it was a total war against two ideologies and because of atrocities and warcrimes the hate was widespread, even so I know of german pilots who were downed and brought to the VVS units they'd been fighting for weeks or months. As a example II./JG54 Major 'Assi' Hahn was shot down on 21 feb '43. After crash landing Hahn was captured and taken to a Soviet fighter base where he was introduced to the fighter unit II./JG54 had been facing and specifically to the pilot that shot him down. At time of capture Maj Hahn was credited with 108 kills. Conditions were hardly friendly but perhaps polite. Respect amongst airmen earned because of skill shown in battle.

Aerial combat between western allies and germans did however for the most part follow the honor code. One of the more well known exceptions is what happened over Tunisia. One of JG27s 190 units was outnumbered against a spitfire unit. The battle raged over the front line and witnessed by British and German troops alike. After downing several spitfires fighting outnumbered a 190 pilot was shot down, hanging in his chute helpless he was killed by two spitfire pilots, obviously enraged by the loss of their comrades. German troops witnessing the fight were enraged and treatment of POWs on both sides became very grim after this event. I don't recall the date or specific circumstances but it was in Tunisia and probably involved a JG27 unit.

That's why I posted about this being detrimental to AH's community. Excuuu-uuuse me for trying to do the decent thing and be the voice of reason.
