I'll tell you a secret.  No one who knows how to shoot in the osti (or the M16 for that matter) even uses a gunsight.  It is less than useless, it actually lets the gunner think he can hit targets further out than the game actually will allow.

And, I'm not kidding about this.  If you want to know how it's done, search on this topic in the forum for a thread by Zazen, the undisputed master of all ground-to-air gunnery in AH.  He describes how to setup without the gunsight,  why it works, and at what distances you can kill.

Or, you can look me up in-game sometime and I can show you how it's done.  It works, and it will surprise you, but once explained, it will also make sense.

You have a gunsight.  It's your screen.  Use it to the fullest.

That little thing with the dot and the circle on it's only useful if they are coming straight at you or going straight away and even then it's usefulness is marginal.

I dont use a gunsight in the ostwind at all.. I wish one could turn off tracers in it, but i guess that would be "sniping" and cause alot of whining.

Zazen

I have tried this a million times and just can't get the hang of doing Zaz's way. Trying to keep the target at 750, 1/4 from the edge of the screen, with a "bit" of elevation, while tracking smoothly to maintain the target in the proper area is just too much !

What I do is a few practice runs. I'll zoom in, and get target in the right area, then zoom back out to see where abouts he is when I zoomed out. I'll do this a few times to get the idea of my lead. Then I'll just wing it in the zoomed out position. Its not as precise as Zaz's way, but I find it easy to move to other targets.

what I do is hit the page up key and just use my tracers to aim.  Best kill total landed in Osti since has been 8.

I've landed 30+ kills defending in an Ostwind using my method. Generally, my kills are only limited by the number of vulchers before I run out of them. ;)

I've tested it at various resolutions. it works. The trick is to keep your movements smooth and don't think just because the first one missed the next one will. The 37mm rounds have a very slow rate of fire, so your lead can be perfect and they can still thread the needle between rounds...The best way to think of it is not you hitting the plane with a round, but you throwing up rounds that he will fly into as his flight-path intersects with the bullet stream you're throwing up...

Coinbird, try this, zoom in site then set mouse cursor to site center. Now use page up/down to move site outta ur way completely leaving cursor as your aim point.

Or you can do as I do and stick some clear plastic wrap on your monitor and draw a site on it,then use page up/down......:rofl :rofl :rofl

I figured it out it your way before I ever saw your post the first time.  It does work.  My best single sortie is 18 kills and I think a lot of pilots are surprised to be picked off flying past me, not at or away from me.

In my estimation the best shots in order are coming straight at you, passing beside you then going away from you.

Zazen is correct on all this, but I have my on ways also that are quite effective. I get most of my kills every tour with an osti. 99% of all LTARs are very deadly with this vehicle and piss alot of people off with them trying to vulch with our Pain Trains on the runways. Parking...like Zazen said always park on concrete..(but not concrete beside the tower=ditch). I prefer to park on the opposite end of the runways from which the attack come from. Most players will want to drop their ords quickly and will drop on the first target they see. So dont be the first GV they see. If I am attacking base with Osti I park on the opposite side of hill from base at town. Most AC are looking for M3's at town so when they fly over town they see you before to late and you pop them at while low and slow. (careful with tanks in this area). I do not use the sights(blue dot where the aim point is(if you dont wanna use this use cursor)very effective and full sight picture. Deflection shots cant tell ya its just a feel or zone I get(instinct). Flying straight at you I put aim mark a 1/4 inch above AC and start firing 1.5 out(anything beyond 1.5 IMHO is a lucky shot(unless kilz or raptr)..who IMHO are the best osti shooters in game. Hope this helps.
