I see an interesting trend in "democratised" and "liberated" countries.

BAGHDAD - Farmers in southern Iraq have started for the first time to grow opium poppies in their fields, sparking fears that Iraq might become a serious drugs producer along the lines of Afghanistan.

Rice farmers in the fertile plain along the Euphrates, just to the west of Diwaniyah, south of Baghdad, have stopped cultivating rice and are instead planting poppies, Iraqi sources familiar with the area say.

The shift to opium cultivation is still in its early stages but there is little the Iraqi Government can do about it because rival *****e militias and their surrogates in the security forces control Diwaniyah. There have been clashes between militias, police, Iraqi Army and US forces in the city over the last two months.

The shift to opium production is taking place in the well-irrigated land west and south of Diwaniyah around the towns of Ash Shamiyah, al Ghammas and Ash-Shinafiyah. The farmers are said to be having problems in growing the poppies because of the intense heat and high humidity.

It is too dangerous for foreign journalists to visit Diwaniyah but the start of opium poppy cultivation is attested by two students from there and a source in Basra familiar with the Iraqi drugs trade.

This isn't a new trend. This is ancient for that region.

I mean - nothing like that happened under Evil Saddam. Afghan opiate production went up several times since "liberation" also.

Is your point that when people are free they turn to drugs...and when they are oppressed they grow food? So freedom destroys life, and oppression sustanes life?

You would rather see millions live in fear, than to see 1000s of people break laws while millions of others enjoy a good life?

Crime happens even under an iron fist.

The opium poppy isn't just for growing for illegal drug trade. It is also very important to the pharmaceutical industry. Several different drugs are made from the opium poppy.

The seeds of the poppy are widely used as the popular "poppy seed" found in and on many food items such as bagels, bialys, muffins and cakes. The seeds can be pressed to form poppyseed oil, which can be used in cooking, or as a carrier for oil-based paints.

The opium poppy has many legitimate uses, instead of concentrating on stamping out opium poppy production in Afghanistan and now Iraq, (which is likely an impossible task anyways), why not help those folks find legitimate markets for their crops?

Wikipedia has a pretty good write up on the opium poppy.

Our so called leaders can't win any "war on", except the "war on" the middle class... Mission accomplished.

But I'm sure our brainless leaders will try to impose Western drug morals on the locals, which I'm sure they'll violently reject like everything else. I do enjoy the irony in all this; once we got rid of the evil Saddam, and all his security, Iraq became a wide open vacuum for "anything goes", drugs, terrorism, puppy porn, murder, kidnapping all things evil do'ers do... because there's nobody watching, no police to call... no authority. Another mission accomplished.
