first flight and fight in an Me-262 last night
« on: June 07, 2007, 03:04:37 PM »
Wow, that was a blast!

We were totally getting beat last night on the Bishop side, and the price of a Me-262 was so low that I could finally afford it.  Fortunately I had taken one up once offline, so it wasn't the complete first time I ever flew one, but I still only had about 10 minutes of stick time before taking it up in the MA last night.

Oh man, I had such a great flight.  It wasn't so much that I was killin everyone, but rather, what happened on my second kill.  I was coming in on a Typhoon or Tempest and at D400 out I opened up.  Of course, my aim totally sux, so as I was missing him, he of course maneuvered out of the way straight up and I collided with him.  BAM blood all over the windshield.

So, my one goal was to not get killed in my first flight in the plane and I get pilot wounded.  We were over a friendly field, so I was hoping to get it right down, but suddenly there were enemies everywhere.

I'm blacking out and going back and forth with pulling to idle and trying to bleed speed off and alternately going to autopilot and full throttle every 30 seconds when I start to black out.  I'm also continually evading guys who are looking to get the kill on me.  Not sure if I was leaking smoke or fuel, or what, but it seemed like everyone knew I was in trouble.

Eventually, I'm at about 200 indicated and an extended final for the runway.  Some dude in a zero of all things just wouldn't leave me alone.  Suddenly I black out again and go to autopilot.  I wake back up and I'm close to the runway and I get the gear and flaps down.  Suddenly I'm blacking again so I throttle halfway up and go to auto.  In my blacked out state I hear, "ping ping ping ping" and I know I'm getting peppered by somebody.  Nothing I can do.  I come to and I'm over the field and can't make the runway.  Blackout again and "ping ping ping" and then I hear my engine go dead.  I wake up and now the runway is at my 4-5 o'clock and I'm dead stick with my gear and flaps out.  I suck up the gear, reef it over to the right and get pointed right at the runway.  I'm kicking rudder to bleed speed, trying to get rid of all this altitude and ruin the gun solution of whoever is still shooting at me.  Finally I'm over the runway, about 150 indicated and I just plant he plane onto the deck.  I start slewing right and now I'm going down the runway tail first.  I'm praying for the plane to stop before I run off the concrete.  Just as I'm coming to a stop, I black out again!  Now I'm dead engine, blacked out on the runway- a baby seal waiting to be clubbed.

I wake up and man, I am hitting end sortie as fast as I can move that mouse!

It's hard to convey the rush I had trying to get that plane down safe with all the bogies on me, and with a pilot wound, knowing that I had limited time.  Plus, I spent every perk I've earned over the last 2 months of playing.

There is nothing like spending perks on a plane to give you an incentive to get it down safely!

I landed my plane, got the kills, kept me perks.  I was literally shaking with adrenaline when I was done.

I get a message on 200 from Stang:  "Who was that jet that survived my C2 guns of death at A1?"

Man, I am so lucky he wasn't flying something with cannons!

The Me262 isnt worth the perks IMO, but I take one up every once and awhile. 33Vortex and I took them up about a week ago and had some great fun in them. Heres a pic from that sortie.

The only goal I had was not to get killed my first flight.  I didn't even care if I got a kill.

You wouldn't believe how mad I was when I collided with that Typhoon.  I couldn't believe I did that.  I had this guy so square in my gunsight, I can't believe I didn't kill him right off.  The I got PW'd and I just couldn't believe how stupid I was to let that happen.

And then, it was like every bad guy from 4 grids around was over our field and I was just full on instinct trying to set up an approach that kept me out of straight-line autopilot away from a mountain, while avoiding that dam zero that wouldn't stop following me, and meanwhile scrub enough speed to get down before I died.

I had no idea the Me-262 was so tough.  The worst feeling was hearing rounds pinging my plane while I was blacked out.  That was awful.

lol 262's are fun but the scariest part is landing them..

As far as you smoking or what ever so they all wanted you.. lol has nothing to do with smoke. If there is a 262 around it's like a giant magnet for cons. Everyone wants to be the guy to kill the 262.

As a side note I agree on the perks, they aren't really worth it.. however then again I don't fly any of the other perk planes so the 262 is the perkie for me.

I do think you should earn a bit more in them though.. I just landed a sortie with 4 fighter kills in a 262 and got a whooping 1.4 perks. The 262 was only 88 perks at the time so it was kinda cheap, but still. I think yea should get a little more for risking so much.

A useful command for this situation is the '.ef' command.

even when blacked out, you can hit '/' and type: .ef and hit enter and you immediately tower out.... exactly the same as clicking 'end sortie', no penalty or anything like that. This can be done while completely blacked out.

I've escaped many situations like the one you vividly described by using this dot-command.

As a matter of fact, I never click 'end sortie', my computer sucks and it's too much hassle hahah

Also, if you're new in the 262, be wary of slow maneuvers if you have 1 engine out, you're far better off gliding in dead-stick than trying to speed up and go-around again with 1 engine. 262s glide very well, so start your approach early and come in engines-off if you've limped home with an engine out.

I have mapped it as a makro to a button on my throttle to get out fast while being vulched on runway.
